I suppose your Japanese expert friend explained to you : kappa no kawa nagare = Even a expert can can make a mistake in his domaine. Same as another proverb "Kobo mo fude no ayamari". What would be the English counterpart?

Yes, that is exactly what this expert said (as he was explaining one of his opinions to me, but letting me know that even he, an expert in the field he was discussing with me, can make a mistake). When I heard the word "kappa", it started a whole conversation on what kappa means, the mythological creature, the origin of this phrase, etc.
I don't know the other phrase you mentioned though.

emd, I just noticed in my previous post : "Your Japanese EXPERT friend..." and "Even a EXPERT can ... ". That's a pure coicidence that I used the word expert in the two sentences. I, by no means at all, did not mean to insinuate any doubt on your friend's competence but it might have looked so with the way I posted. Just in case
Kobo is a famous buddhist of more than 1000 years ago (very approximative) and was supposed to be a master of calligraghy too. The saying I put means "Even Kobo can make a wrong stoke of brush." Now I think of another, meaning the same : "Saru mo ki kara ochiru = Even a monkey can fall from a tree."

No problem, kappa, I didn't read it that way. I really like the one about the monkey. So true. I work with alot of experts in my job and the only dangerous ones are the ones who don't know they too can fall from the tree or make a wrong stroke of the brush.
Anyway, I like your screen name and it certainly opened a whole new area of conversation and learning for me this week. I'll never eat kappa maki again without thinking of this creature and these sayings. And we will watch out for kappa on the Sumida river cruise and especially the Arashiyama boat ride, where the boat is open!

Wow, hi kappa. When I saw this post at the top I thought maybe mrwunrfl had just gotten back from a sudden trip and was going to tell us he bet on the horse and won!
Did they ever make the movie about (and starring) this famous horse?

You are welcome, mrwunrfl.
Yes, I think so too it's time. The owner Mrs Anzai(?), said after her last race in 2004, they hoped she could make a succesful come back but alas, no.
Looks like the movie got released in April 2005.
