I was also in Bangkok on Tuesday night. We were out at a hotel across town and drove back through the streets after midnight.
We wouldn't have even known a coup has occurred if our friends and family hadn't been emailing, etc. from outside of Thailand. We saw some troop transports, etc., but never felt threatened in any way.
We stayed up until 3am-4am with our colleagues in the hotel lobby to remain alert to the changing situation. Our Thai colleagues received a message around 3am saying our office would be open for business as normal by 8am.
However, our company's US security department suggested (but did not require) that we take the first available flight home. I took a cab from the hotel to BKK around 4:30am and had no trouble getting to the airport or onto a flight out. But if I had to do it over again, I probably would have stayed for my original departure (one more day) and went shopping.

I received an email from my friend in BKK this morning, and he said no worries. That everything was normal, and not to worry about my trip in december. I was'nt really that worried anyway, and had no intentions of cancelling my trip, but it was nice to hear from him and hear that everything was okay.

Yes things are returning to normal and the troops with their Korean war vintage tanks(only use for coup) are being slowly remove from central Bangkok. On the outskirt of Bangkok there are now troops stationed on all the major roads and highways that are from the North, South, East and West of Bangkok. These troops are equipped with M60 A3 and M48 A3 tanks and they do look like they mean business. I think they are worried about possible rogue troops from the country side coming in to Bangkok.
I'll give it a few more weeks before calling things as back to normal since I don't like soldiers with loaded weapon eyeing me.
