Invited to Yantai wedding! Gift suggestions please!
 

We are so lucky to be invited to our son's friend's wedding (a Chinese couple) while we are staying in Yantai next month.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice wedding gift to bring them from the UK (not too heavy hopefully!)
My son is not very good at this sort of thing so again I look for advice from fellow Fodorites!

Something red is always good and I know something like a red blanket is good for the couple I think its symbolic of a good martial bed or marriage :-) Also nothing sharp like scissors or knives and NEVER a clock in China as it means your time is up and is symbolic of death. Also white is a funeral colour but young people do not realy care about this and wear western bridal dresses these days. Maybe something small and nice from Harrods which would seem special or one of the major UK department stores. What part of the UK are you from? Maybe something from your region also a small bit of money nothing like we give here but I think I read something a while back about a bejing wedding and they all gave 100-200 yuan about 10-20 euro. Dont overdo it. Good luck and enjoy!

I have a red dress to wear to the wedding.
My son said about just giving them some money but maybe a gift from the UK as well so it was special.
We are from Scotland by the way.

I have several Chinese friends here in the US. Just from being with them on special occasions, I am sharing my ideas. I know that most often they like to give money as gifts in little red gift money envelopes.
I always think money gift is an easy one and eventually all money is put together in the bank or spent.
Thus, I like to add a little gift in addition, so they can have something for a long time. From Scotland you can get some sort of a nice decoration for their new home, a unique picture frame or even a pretty tray with Scottish scenery on it. How about some sort of music!

I also need to bring presents for our son's girlfriend's parents who we are meeting for the first time. Please help!

Again nothing sharp, no clocks etc. Maybe a small peice of scottish glass work or a small bud vase...rennie Mackintosh? Sometthing symblic of where you are from.

I won't suggest westerns give money unless you are related to the couple, wool his and hers scarfs would be nice gifts.

For your potential future in-laws, candy is always welcome (scottish butterscotch), a small painting or a piper figurine. Ask your son what to bring his girlfriend.

The bride wears a red dress, guests don't, go for pink, lavender, purple or blue with nice pumps and bring a wrap just in case the weather gets cool after the dinner banquet.
