Interesting WSJ Article re: Japanese Aversions to Perfumes
In particular, the article talks about fabric softener. It can be found here:

Ha! I must be part Japanese! I cannot tolerate strong perfume odors. If I'm on an elevator, I want to get OFF! It's not easy when I'm on a plane, but I always have a very small "pot" of VICKS to dab under my nose to help cover up the perfume smell.

I saw a reference to "energy scrimping offices" pointing to keeping the AC bill and use down no doubt. We have been to Narita only twice and each time was in oct. but it was stifling there. Is this why??

Interesting - scented everything laundry related is all the rage. There are even samples of each fragrance in the store. Scented air fresheners in every toilet and shoe closet. And booming sales of cosmetics, perfumes and "deo" sprays for both men and women. BUT, I can notice the difference between the scent of a Japanese product and that of Thailand, or the US for example.
NRT is always hot! in summer it's terrible, and yes, it's energy saving.
