Hi there, Can anyone tell me if we can walk or do we need to take a cab to the Pearl Market from this hotel?
Also what time are they open until in the evening?

Xidan is a little bit far from Pearl Market,it takes 40-60 minutes to walk there.

Did you get a good deal at Skyway Landis? I've had lunch there. It's at 15 Dapu Road (not Dupu), it's 15 minutes by cab to the Bund. Don't know which shopping street you are refering to, Huaihai and Xintiandi (10 minutes cab) and Nanjing Road East (15 minutes cab). The hotel is in a vibrant residental/hotel/office highrises area with loads of restaurants, the nearby mall is more oriented to daily life. My DS' office and home is 1/2 block south of the hotel on each side of the Ramada, let me know what else you'd like to find out.

Hong Qiao Market (it's proper name) closes at 7pm. Which begs the question, of course, as to why anyone would go there.

Thank you we are on a tour so i am not sure what they paid but they changed a few of our hotels at the last minute. The Landis looks beautiful - if you know of any local restaurant that is special that would be great!

The hotel in Beijing sounds like it is on the outskirts of everything which is disappointing but it is our first stop so we will be tired!

The S/L is a new 5 star hotel, quite posh, the 5-6 restaurants on site are not cheap. The local residents in the area have demanding palates, restaurants that don't deliver don't survive for long. Aren't your meals included in the package?

I'd recommend Bifengtang 1/2 block north of the hotel on the corner, very popular with lots of small plates choices and the seating is designed like you are sitting in little boats. I don't know your schedule but we may run into you there!

Joy City is on the edge of the old city proper, not on the outskirts, 3 star at best.

Yes our meals are included but we have one free day to be on our own.

Dear Peter - We want to see the Pearl Market because we are TOURISTS!!! I realized years ago not to fight it to enjoy being a tourist and most of the time even the strangest tourist traps are most enjoyable!!!!

Even though we are on a tour we always try to get to meet local people and see the real country of where ever we may be and we are very much looking forward to this experience!!!

I entirely agree that tourist traps can be entertaining if approached in the right spirit, and one is an observer and not a victim.

Who cannot but agree? Unfortunately this won't be happening on a tour, and most certainly not at Hong Qiao, which is an unnatural tourist-targeting place, not somewhere where there'll be real interaction with ordinary people. For that, go there by bus, and visit some of the neighbouring restaurants. Or if you're really interested in a market where real local people make real transactions, then some other destinations can be suggested.

The 'real' country, if that phrase makes any sense at all, is with about 730 million people down on the farm.

We took the bus from Xidan to the Pearl Market. It was either the 202 or the 205. So I guess that doesn't help much does it? :)
