Information on Tibet - leaving 23/9

Hello All,

My friends and I will be leaving for Tibet via Chengdu on 23/9. We have a few persons over the age of 60 in our group so we would like to gather info with regards to weather conditions/altitude sickness/water/food etc before we go. We heard that it may be very cold, snow even around that date. We would, therefore appreciate very much first hand info from those of you who have been there. We'll be staying at Holiday Inn, Lhasa. Anyone stayed there before?.

Thank you.
Winnie

It's not a Holiday Inn anymore. The contract was dropped in the face of the Free Tibet cause.

Hi Winnie,

The biggest problem may be the altitude. My friends and I spent our first day in Tibet sleeping in the hotel to acclimatise. This is very important as over-exertion could be quite disastrous. We had heard of travellers throwing up, getting severe headaches etc due to altitude. One of my friend had a bad toothache.
Having said that, there are people who feels OK and fine. Think the strategy is really to rest well on the first few days for the body to adjust. Sightseeing will be more fun then.

The temperature in Tibet could drop drastically at night, even in summer. We spent a very very cold night in Gyantse. Pls bring your warm clothings!
Food was basically Chinese and palatable. The hotel we stayed at was Tibet Hotel, which was fine with us.

Tibet was an unusual experience. Enjoy!

Thanks to KM and Angelfish for your reply. I'll sure take note of the 'cold cold' condition and bring my winter jacket and the advice of taking plenty of rest. I'll get some relevant medication from my doctor too.

hi, Winnie. Sure would love to hear about what you found in Tibet. I'll be going in April, 2000, and am interested in anything you care to share.
