Info on New Delhi and Lucknow?
 

Hi

I have been invited to a wedding in India and it is all happening pretty fast. I have applied for a visa and it has been granted and I'm now looking into tickets. But feel free to give me advice about New Delhi and Lucknow :-) Is Delhi worth a visit for a few days or should we go to Jaipur or Agra? We will only have about a week in India this time but I'm sure we will go back :-)

Lucknow is certainly worth a couple of days. Lots of Indo/British history there. It's an expensive City for accommodation, rather like Delhi, however it has exceptional food and great buildings to wander around/through. East to get to by train from Delhi. Enjoy. It's certainly not a city foreigners have on their radar! Exactly why I spent a few days there!

Delhi is not my favorite Indian city, but there's certainly enough to see to keep you occupied for a few days. If you're sure you'll be back I would save Jaipur for a longer visit, but you could manage Agra - just make sure you see the Taj at both dusk and dawn and remember it's closed on Fridays. Do you have to fly into Delhi, or you could you enter via Kolkata instead?

Lucknow is not a city I would normally recommend for a first visit, but it is off the tourist trail and it is atmospheric. I am a fan of Indian train travel (book through cleartrip.com and read seat61.com if you choose to ride the trains) but I would consider flying to Lucknow, at least in one direction. I had difficulty finding a hotel in Lucknow, but if you're going for a wedding presumably that will be taken care of?

We stayed at Hotel Gompti. Excellent central location, close to major shopping and attractions. A nice stroll to some fab local food and the Hotel's restaurant was good too. The Gomti (like many Indian hotels under Govt. management) is not brilliantly maintained but it served it's purpose, for us. The sights to visit are noted below. Lucknow is such a historic City and if you have the time I'd highly recommend a visit. I'm a fan!

I would suggest flying from Delhi to Lucknow instead. It's cleaner and easier than a train. The flight is only 45 minutes. The airport in Lucknow is call Amausi and is very clean and easy to navigate. You can take a taxi into Lucknow.

Lucknow has a strong Muslim history and will see it in the architecture and handicrafts.

Lucknow is very famous for a particular type of embroidery called "Chikan" work (pronounced the same as "chicken". It ranges from simple and to very fine and elaborate. Any clothing or household item made of fabric can be found with chikan work.

Well if you have have to choose between Delhi and Jaipur, Agra then i would like to recommend Jaipur and Agra because Delhi is very crowded place and as the temperature rises it become more uncomfortable and yes there are some places to visit in Delhi but they cannot be compared with forts of Jaipur and of course not with Taj Mahal.
