Inexpensive Hotel for one night in Ho Chi Minh City...
Hi All,
Thanks for taking time to read this post. I leave for a business trip this Sunday, 2/21 and get into HCMC on February 22 at 11pm. I need a cheap, ie 15-25 USD or at
most > $75.00 (but SAFE) place somewhere near the Caravelle Hotel to stay for the night. My colleagues don't arrive until the 23rd. I don't really want to charge the company if I can find an inexpensive place to lay my head for a few hours. Anyone know of such a place? I've seen people post about such things so I was hoping someone could advise. Really love reading all your messages!
Gratefully,
Melissa

You will find many of the cheaper hotels and guesthouse in District one are in Pham Ngu Lao, the "backpackers" area. Which is a 20 min walk from the Caravelle. We stayed in Ngoc Son guesthouse which was clean, had air-con and had very friendly and helpful owners. At $12 it was a bargain. The downside for you is that it was down an alley from the main street and although it seemed safe enough, it was not somewhere I would advise a female arriving late at night.
Personally, I would suggest that you pay a bit more (you do get what you pay for) and arrange for the hotel to send a car to meet you at the airport. c$50 will get you a nice room in a reasonable hotel.
There are always taxi drivers at any airport who will try the usual scams (i.e. the hotel is closed/not very good/ my brother has something much better/its on fire! etc.. I am sure most employers would want to ensure the safety of their employees even if it costs a little bit more. Lonely Planet is a good resource for teh cheaper places to stay

Thank you crellston! I'm perfectly okay with $50 USD. What hotel is that? Then I can make the reservation and have them send a car to meet me at the airport. Appreciate the help!

We stayed at the Metropole hotel for about $75/double per day last November. I chose that hotel because of the swimming pool on the roof and the convenient location. HCMC is very hot and chaotic. it's good to have a base where it is safe and orderly and a pool to cool off. The staff are very professional and spoke good Engiish, the breakfast is both Vietnamese and Continental and included. They can pick up from the airport for about US$15 and the driver was waiting the whole time when the plane was late. Unlike what some people were complaining on trip advisor, my room was absolutely quite and it was worth it. Both Caravelle and Metropole hotels are in district one.

I wouldn't stay in PNL. Not the best area and not really near the Caravelle. You might check out the Indochine. It's less than 5 minutes walking from the Caravelle on Hai Ba Trung.

A&EM is another option. Several within short walking distance from the Caravelle.

Spring as mentioned above is also good.
