Indonesia 7-day visa discontinued

Just read that the 7-day / $10 visa on arrival is being discontinued. The 30-day $25 visa will be the only option. The tourism ministry is trying to appeal the decision, but as of now it becomes effective 2 Feb. 2010.

FYI

Still it's better than the consulate in NYC, the consulate is charging $45 for a two-four week visa.

As is often the case in Indonesia inter-agency dispute makes for illogical policies. The elimination of the $US25 7 day visa will put the nail in the coffin for the already ailing resorts in Bintan and Batam which rely on one day back and forths from Singapore. I anticipate that an exception will be made for those destinations but right now it's unclear.

The good news is that evidently 30 day visas can now be extended to 60 days but the mechanism for doing so is also unclear.

By increasing the cost of the entry visa (plus the exit charge)Indonesia just gives potential travelers another reason to choose another destination; however, the income from visitors who have paid and will paid is just so addictive that no one seems to care about the long term ramifications.

Just another example of a mostly dysfunctional government.

Thanks for the update. Indonesia is in our future travel plan and honestly we're really looking forward to visiting the country.

Greetings from Bali. Approaching the end of a week-long business trip. I can confirm that the 7-day visa is indeed no longer available. Bali is surprisingly busy for the 'low' season.

Michael, Any indication at immigration about the possibility of extending the 30 day visa to 60 days?

In more officialdom to come out Indonesia: Visitors to Borobudur (and ultimately other temples in the area) must now cover their knees. If you're wearing shorts or such, they'll give you a sarong.

Marmot, not a peep. I'm sure it will involve a visit to some remote office, filling out endless forms, and killing a whole day, if not more.

The sarong thing is a bit overdue, IMO. The amount of disrespect people (not just tourists) show to religious places in Indonesia is a bit bothersome.
