I'm intending to go to India in January, a trip I've been planning at least 3 years, and I tell you, I still can't get over how expensive it is, and now, this year, it's more expensive than ever for hotels-I need to find something in Delhi, some sort of guesthouse, that doesn't cost much-but so far I haven't found that place.

The Delhi Bed and Breakfast is pretty good, although their airport picks ups and drop offs can be expensive. They can also get train tickets..but again, expensive.

If you stick to the basic accommodation (which includes meals)it's pretty good, very safe and well located. You almost become part of the family.

Girlspytravel-how long are you going to India for and what major cities are you planning on visiting? We are supposed to be leaving around Nov.3rd and I haven't even done my usual tour planning and am getting very nervous about this. Thanks for any help!

In response to your hotel question, the hotels in Mumbai and New Delhi are notoriously over priced. I suggest you try outlying locations that offer similar accommodations for half the price and appeal more to the mid-market traveler. But whatever you do, don't stay in a hotel too near the airport. Airport hotels are infamous for robberies, even in the US.
