India trains question

I'm going to be in India May 15-24, arriving Delhi. I'm thinking about taking a train from Delhi to Mumbai, and perhaps on to Goa, and then flying back. Is that practical? There are so many websites about train travel, but they aren't all that useful in practice! Thanks...

If you haven't visited this site, www.seat61.com has a pretty detailed page on India travel, including how to book, the 8 classes of travel, etc. Delhi to Mumbai is only about 16 hours on the overnight sleeper. Seems pratical to me...

OK, the direct link seems to be working, the above link is to a web page (about Indian Trains and timetables)I've put together over the last couple of years, it has about 300 links to other pages.

Calipete, what do you need to know?

Do you need to go to Mumbai?

3 days a week there is a convenient train from Delhi to Goa (there are other daily trains, but they take too long).

On Sundays and Tuesdays train 2432 departs Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) at 11:00 and gets to Madgaon (Goa) at 12:25 the following day, thus passing through the scenic Konkan stretch during daylight hours, this train is a Rajdhani Express, one of India's premier trains, all meals are included in the (inflated) price.

First Class air con = Rs 5430
2-tier air con = Rs 2915
3-tier air con = Rs 1985

Train 2450 departs Hazrat Nizamuddin on Saturdays at 07:25 and gets to Madgaon at 13:15 the following day.

First Class air con = Rs 4301
2-tier air con = Rs 2252
3-tier air con = Rs 1438
Sleeper Class = Rs 531 (not air con)

These trains can be booked over the Internet and the tickets printed on your home computer, tickets for Indian trains can generally be booked up to 60 days in advance, it is always best to book ahead if you know the dates you will be travelling.

Info about booking train tickets from abroad can be found in one of the links in the 'Train Information' thread in the last reply.

Whatever you do, DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT take 3rd class train. I made that mistake...hahaha...I don't wish that on anyone.

Make sure to reserve before hand as well...at least one week.

What do you mean by '3rd class train'?

Do you mean Sleeper Class (where you can reserve a berth) or 2nd class unreserved?
