This is a strange post now, Jules... lol. There are so many deletions it doesn't make any sense at all!
Reading back through it, I think that Footprint's commemts are the most spot on. Once a festival has been taken over by the state government, as in Rajasthan, and turned into a tourist event it invariably suffers. Your photos will be fantastic. The reality of the event may well be less impressive. You may leave thinking you and everybody else has been corralled into a photo-opportunity and not a festival.
And when Footprint talks about dust - he knows what he's talking about. This is breathing in a thick haze of dirt. You have to wear a robber's mask across your mouth.
But if anybody can find a REAL festival, local, mostly smallish, mostly rural - then abandon your touring plans and STAY. Wonderful beyond all comprehension.
The BIG upside of travelling in Jan and Feb Jules is that Holi occurs on March 2 in 2010. For the two weeks before Holi [and the two weeks after] there are wonderful, wonderful tribal festivals in Rajasthan and neighboring Gujarat. You could divert easy as pie for a day or so.
If you scroll right to end of this piece you'll find a description of one of them:

So, before you lock in plans, do a google on Indian Festivals Jan/Feb 2010. Udaipur or Dungarpur in Rajasthan would put you within easy reach.

Hi Jules.
These are our plans as they stand now. Almost there! Our friends are in India right now so will firm up when they come back end of November.
We arrive in Delhi at 130Am on Jan 22 and will connect to Udaiapur arriving at 8AM
two nights in Udaiapur at Jagat Niwas. We thought this might be a calmer place to start our Indian vacation.
We will fly to Jodhpur and be picked up by Four Wheel Drive India and driven to Nagaur for an overnight. They will pick us up again the next afternoon, Jan 25, and take us to Bishnoi Village south of Jodphur for two nights.
THey will pick us up again on the 27th for the train to Jaisalmer, I asked them to buy the tickets for us and 'put us on the train'
We spend four nights in Jaisalmer for the camel festival. Our hotel is Shahi Palace.
when do you arrive in Jaisalmer?

Dog I hadn't looked at this thread in ages. I just saw that a comment had been added yesterday so looked in. Even then I didn't read the thread just added my own comment!
Live42day I don't have our itinerary with me but think we get to Jaisalmer on the 27th for 3 nights. I am slightly embaressed to say that I can't remember which hotel I settled on there. Did all that research made a choice & now I can't remember!!!!! We have booked a car & driver through Yatrik. Again did a lot of communicating with a few different folks & decided on Yatrik. J
