India - New Delhi question
 

We arrive in New Delhi the day before our travel itinerary begins. I am looking for recommendations of additional sites we should see and/or places to shop for what is best to buy in New Delhi. The following gives you a summary of what we will see in New Delhi with our guide:
In New Delhi visit the landmark Qutb Minar tower, Parliament House, and the official residence of the President of India. Reflecting the city’s Mughal past, Old New Delhi takes you through the labyrinthine streets passing by elaborate mosques, majestic monuments and colorful bazaars. Visits include the 17th-century Red Fort, India’s largest mosque, Mahatma Gandhi’s Memorial and the National Museum.

Visit the home of Indira Gandhi, now a shrine to her life.
See the Bahai Lotus temple.
Consider the beautiful Swami Narayan temple.
Shop in Connaught Place.

Cottage industries Emporium is a great place for all in on shopping. Prices are marked, they have crafts, housewares, jewelry, clothing, carpets, etc from all over India, and the building has AC! You can do better outside if you are good at bargaining, but it's a great place to see what you like, andprices are still quite reasonable. It's across the street and up a block from the Imperial hotel. Don't believe the touts who tell you it's closed and try to steer you elsewhere.

You can get good stuff in Chadni chouk (sp?) but it's a bit more work as each alley carries different items and you have to haggle like crazy.

Santushti market, Khan Market and Dilli Haat are other good shopping spots.

If you have much interest in architecture, I would not miss Hanumans's tomb(sp?). It has an amazing water system.

If you'll be seeing the forts in other cities (Agra, Jaipur, etc) I'd pass on Red Fort.

Thank you for the responses. If we were to choose 1 or 2 of the shopping areas (Cottage Industries Emporium vs. santshti mkt vs. Khan mkt vs. dilli haat, which ones would you advise Also, what is the best way to access them from the hotel - taxi?

New Delhi traffic can be brutal. Really brutal. I would check first to see what time of day is best to beat it. A cab would be good then. They have been building up an el system so if that is accessible that's great. Forget the bus!

Visit the spice market in old Delhi.

Perhaps you could hire a driver through your hotel.

I would choose Cottage Industries #1. Santishti is easy and laid back-away from the hustle and bustle with lots of shops geared to the local ex-pats. Khan requires wandering from shop to shop but it's not overwhelming. Hiring a driver from your hotel would be better than taxi - just avoid rush hour. I agree to skip red fort - Hanuman's Tomb is a must do ...

I think both lcuy and Craig meant Humayun's tomb rather than Hanuman. The former was a Mughal Emperor, son of Babur and father to Akbar.

Well you have pretty much soaked in every part of the city. But I'll suggest that you also travel to the old city (Chandni chowk, daryaganj), the bylanes will surely enthrall you. As for shopping I'll suggest take trip down to dilli haat, where you can pick up crafts from different states of India.

Dilli haat is pretty good. We went there last time in India and its got a nice variety of item. Good choice.
