Third time lucky ldtc

The Oberoi is a block away from Sudder Street. Tons of cheap and cheerful [read food-poisoning] options here.

But if you walk a block further you'll come to Park Street. Main shopping street with a ton of good restaurants. Do a google search on restaurants there.

But why don't you just ask the concierge at the Oberoi? And be sure to make a booking. Or better still - just eat there. The food is great. I recommend the room-service thali.

One thing to know: if anybody had any recommendations they would have posted them on your first attempt. Kolkata ain't the destination of choice for most guys in here.

Your post reminded me of my second night in Kolkata last November. Saturday night. Was staying at the Bengal Club, just off Park Street - couldn't face their restaurant - went out looking for one. First choice: highly rated Mughal joint nearby. Go in, confusion, sit down...

Then nothing. The restaurant is packed with locals. Alone, in the corner sat dogster from Planet Mongo. 35 minutes later I abandon ship.

Next restaurant. Highly rated. Besieged with a crowd of 50 - 60 would-be diners. Wait 30 mins. Abandon ship.

Next restaurant. A groovy, multi-level place full of young, rich and drunk Kolkata youth. Here I got a table.

I was soon to see why. The food was shocking. I ate what little I could, paid the bill and walked quietly out. Life is too short for a drama. [At this point in my evening, at least]

I ended up at Hungry Jack's.

Then I went back to the Bengal Club, checked out and went directly to the Oberoi.

Hence my recommendation for the room-service thali.

DOGSTER -

I am laughing at the description of you trying to find a decent restaurant - ( I don't feel hopeful) :))

I am in CCU for 4 nights - 3 upfront at the beginning of the vacation and one at the end - how many times can I eat at the Oberoi ( I am still laughing - so you don't have to answer that one)

we are staying at the Oberoi and will probably eat there - I don't know where Park St. is yet ( I will when I get there). I can ask the conceirge - I really didn't even think of that!
Thanks so much
