In 18 days from Hongkong via Siem Reap to Singapore (itinerary)
 

Hi all,

my boyfriend and I will be travelling to Asia Mid of February next year for three weeks. We will have 18 days "on the ground" in total.
We have three things we definitely want to see in this three weeks and I am right know trying to set up a good and feasible itinerary to get these three things combined.


The three things are:

1. Hongkong
2. Angkor Wat
3. Singapore

I currently have the following itinerary in mind:

Day 1: Arriving in Hongkong from Germany
Day 2 to 5: Explore Hongkong incl. day trip to Macau
Day 6: Travel to Siem Reap
Day 7 to 9: Explore Angkor Wat
Day 10: Travel to Singapore
Day 11 to 14: Explore Singapore
Day 15: Travel to Kuala Lumpur
Day 16 to 17: Explore Kuala Lumpur
Day 18: Departing for Germany from Kuala Lumpur

I know the route is a little bit uncommon...

What do you think about this itinerary and the allocated time? Is it feasible and balanced right? Is the order right? Should we spend more time somewhere?
Any advice highly appreciated. We haven't booked anything yet and are therefore able to change basically the whole itinerary.

I know the flights between Hongkong and Siem Reap are quite pricey - any advice on how to get there cheaper is also highly appreciated (currently I am planning with a flight with SIA from HKG via SIN to REP for 249 EUR).

That flight from Hong Kong to Siem Reap via Singapore is certainly the long way to get there! Consider other routings, via Bangkok (Bangkok Air and Air Asia both fly to Siem Reap from Bangkok) or via KL on Air Asia.

Both Hong Kong and Singapore are very expensive destinations.

KL I find rather boring in comparison to your other destinations. I'd opt for Georgetown, Penang instead. You can fly to Penang from Singapore, then it's a quick flight to KL for your flight home. If it is in the budget, I'd suggest staying at the E&O Hotel in Penang.

Personally, I'd cut a day from Singapore and add it to Penang instead.

thanks for your comments, I will definitely think about adding Georgetown into the itinerary.
I saw there is also a train running from SIN to Butterworth (and from there ferry to Penang) via KUL. Although quite time-consuming (6 hours SIN to KUL, 4 hours KUL to Butterworth according to seat61.com) I find this an interesting option too.

As for the flights I do have to add that I am an airline professional and a little bit picky with airlines I fly with. That's why I opted for SIA, although knowing it is not the perfect way... But I will think about it again..

Just found out incredible news:

HK Express will commence services from HKG to REP starting October 1st 2015 three times per week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays)!
Right now the airfares on this route are at approx 100 Euro incl. baggage fee).

I hope this will also increase competition with Dragonair and flight prices will remain on this level for HKG-REP.

Ok, great! HK Express non-stop to Siem Reap is a much faster trip.

They are all easy flights, it just depends how much time you want to spend in airports.

We have just come home today from a visit to our son and daughter-in-law in Indonesia, and connecting flights had us sleeping at one airport for 5 hours. 4am, find a space.

Waste of time, we just don't want to do that any more, but airlines seem to be doing this more often with connections in Asia/Pacific. I don't know why.

I always now take a good sarong and a little pillow, everyone sleeps on the floor over there. True!
