How to reconfirm flights
 

I need to know how you reconfirm a flight while you are in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Singapore.

I've looked online and find phone numbers that are 800 numbers in the USA. Since I will not be in the USA when I need to do this, I wanted to know how others handle this.

Last time we took a trip to Thailand, when we got to the airport for one of our flights we found out that AirAsia had cancelled our flight and scheduled us for a flight 4 hours later.

So far, I have worked on my profile with the various airlines and changed my email address to our travel Yahoo account. I have a T-Mobile phone that is set up for international, and I listed that number in my profile. I'm hoping that I might receive notifications of flight changes.

What else do I need to do to check on flights and reconfirm?

While you are still home call your airline up and ask them if you really have to confirm, if so how to do it?

You may be able to do it by pulling up their web page and entering your confirmation number and see if there is a prompt that says "confirm!"

I haven't confirmed a flight in maybe 6 or 7 years. I have gold cards and with them (NWA) I don't have to re-confirm.

When I was flying on another airline that arrived overseas during the day time I would take a few minutes to locate the airline office (at the airport) and give them my hotel name and number and any other information that they needed.

I always make a point of staying in the city closest to the airport the night before and using that hotel telephone number as the final contact point. For Thailand I always spend my last night in Bangkok so there will be no problem with connecting flights too!

When it is 24 hours before my departure time my airline sends me an email for early check in. If there is no flight then they will notify me at that time. I just popped up the home page for my airline, NWA, and there is a selection choice to RECONFIRM the flight.

(Flights do break down or have weather related problems that don't show up until you are close to your departure time. So if your flight was moved up a few hours there could be a very good reason for it!)

I forgot to add this, for Singapore, Bangkok and Chiang Mai there are lots of cheap internet shops you can use to connect with your airline.

In case of language problems, some hotel clerks will do the calling for you and all you have to do is pay for the call. Some travel agents will do this confirmation for you for a small fee, one or two dollars probably.

Just have your hotel deal with it. That's what I do...call the business center and tell them to reconfirm the flights or ask the front desk the phone numbers and do it yourself. Happy Travels!

That said, Air Asia is well known to cancel or shift flights by many hours with no notice to passengers, even when they have your conatct info. I'd have my hotel call them before I leave for the airport.

As has already been posted, Thailand now has a domestic passenger rights law, which applies to budget carriers. If a flight is delayed more than a few hours they have to buy you a meal. If it's canceled, they have to compensate you even if they can book you on another flight. Expect service to get a lot better!

Michael, I read your previous post about the Thai domestic passenger rights law. The situation one poster ran into with Air Asia was that desite confirming the time of the flight about a week before (and despite Air Asia having contact info for her) she arrived at the airport to find that air Asia had "rescheduled" the flight by something like 12 hours! If the airline calls it a schedule change, would the rules you mention still apply?
