how to read JR timetables

I've been trying to figure out exact routes/times for train travel from tokyo-kyoto-takayama-tokyo at the following website: http://www.jnto.go.jp/db/traffic/ My question is, how can I tell if a train listed is a Shinkansan (bullet train)? They list names like Super Express, Limited Express, etc. Also, the timetables often have an asterix * next to some departure/arrival times but there is no explanation what this means.

If I have a JR pass, then can I basically go on any Super Express trains? I know that there is one type of train that JR passes do not include.

Thanks for any help.

SPSuper Express) = Shinkansen. The rail pass allows travel on all but the Nozomi.
The asterisk denotes a special schedule. It is a hyperlink, so if you click on it a calendar will open in a pop up window and the applicable days will be highlighted.
