Yes Okoshi I do rent cars in Japan and drive in rural settings but the Hakone region is easily navigable with its public transport systems and depending on the time of year, we have seen massive car traffic jams on the narrow roadways as we slid by it on the train. You will be in Japan at the end of the cherry blossoms season so very lucky for you.
