How to Divide 61/2 Days Between Shanghai and Hong Kong
I'll be traveling with my kids who are 13 and 16. We will have 6 1/2 days (not including travel from US to China), and I am looking for suggestions as to how to break up the time between Shanghai and Hong Kong.

We'll be flying into Shanghai and then taking advantage of the 72 hour "travel without visa" allowance.

Having never been to Shanghai or Hong Kong, would you recommend we spend more time in one place than the other or split it down the middle?

We love seeing the sites and visiting historical places and just enjoying cities.

Thanks for any input.

I prefer Hong Kong. So I would probably spend 3 in Shanghai and 4 in Hong Kong, provided you're going when it's not blistering hot there.

Be careful about the 72 hour travel without Visa allowance. I know that it's real but I've had an airline refuse to board me until they saw my Visa, even though I was going to be in Shanghai only 2 nights.

Well that's disturbing... How can that be? I would think all the main airlines would know about TWOV.

We are going mid-March so I'm guessing the weather will be cool but not cold.

Check carefully to see if flying onward to Hong Kong from Shanghai qualifies you for the 72 hour visa. My understanding is that you are required to fly to a third country (your home country is 1, Shanghai [China] is 2, and Hong Kong - well. it's part of China even though it has different visa requirements).

Hong Kong qualifies as a "third country", so are Macau and any airport in Taiwan with non-stop flight from China. So, 72-hour TWOV applies.

Thanks, Ray, I wasn't sure about that.
