Unless you are very fortunate, the guides will be more interested in pushing you into emporiums.

I would suggest you hire guides on an ad hoc basis at the more important monuments, instead of having one accompany you throughout the trip.

For senior citizen travel I heartily recommend using the better family hotels for the personal attention and care they provide - the hotels chosen by welltraveledbrit are all excellent examples of such hotels!

Thanks for your suggestion. I will have another look at the hotel list recommended by welltraveledbrit.

As to the guide -- which sites do you consider the "more important monuments"? I was thinking that for the Taj, there would be a lot of guidebook material and information that we wouldn't need a guide there but was thinking we should get a guide for Jaisalmer, and other areas in Rajasthan...

Rajhelp50 is correct in pointing out that some guides will try to steer you to shops where they earn a commission. Based on others' experience on this forum, if you are using Compass Tours that will not be the case. I have also heard that if you hire guides on an "ad hoc" basis, you may well end up with guides who speak English just fine in their canned presentations but will not be able to answer any of your questions. I am sure you could save some money using a guidebook in some places but we feel that the services of a good guide are invaluable and can really enhance the experience. In most cases we are using guides for a 1/2 day at a time so that we have a chance to shop and sightsee on our own.
