How long typhoid vaccine last?
Does anyone know how long a typhoid vaccine last? Do you have to take it every year whenever you travel to a country that is at risk ? Is there a way to test your body if you already have immunity for typhoid from a previous vaccination? thanks

Which vaccine did you have? The shot lasts 2 - 3 years, the oral vaccine (a series of pills taken over a week) lasts 5 years.
I don't know that there is an antibody titer available for typhoid as there is for Hep B, for example. |
Check with your travel doctor or nurse. Do you have a shot record?
Typhoid shot is good for two years. The Typhoid live pill vaccination is good for five years....see below, then see your doctor. http://www.cdc.gov/nip/publications/VIS/vis-typhoid.pdf Aloha! |
Thanks, all! Anyone know why bother w/ injection when the pills last longer? I hear you only have to take like 4 pills every other day and it should last you for 5 years. Any side effects there compared to injection?
The pills cost less than the needle even, and no pain... |
The oral vaccine is relatively new in comparison to the injectible. Some people get gastrointestinal distress from the oral vaccine. You cannot be taking antibiotics at the same time you take the oral vaccine. When I last had the typhoid vaccine, the oral was more expensive than the injectible, but I opted for the oral because I travel to the tropics often enough it is worth it to me to have the longer efficacy.
