How long should we allow to get to the airport in Bangkok?
Our flight for Chiang Rai leaves at 13:40 on Monday, April 6. How long should we allow to get to the airport from the Mandarin?
I was hoping to do a little shopping or touring Monday morning. Will that be possible?
Tong suggested the Floating Markets; but, that appears to be way out of town.

If you leave early enough, let say at around 6.00 am you can get to the floating market by 7.00 - 7.30 am. However, I would consider checking out of your hotel and take your luggage with you so that you can head directly to the airport after your tour. I think Tong will know better but since you are only flying to Chiang Rai I would go directly to the airport instead of going back to the Mandarin, perhaps you can even start you tour later than 6.00 am as well if you were to do that.

i would not do the market....too many things can happen....stick close to bkk....go make merit instead..
i always plan to leave 3 hours before my flight....yes i end up with tons of time at the airport, but i prefer it that way....even for domestic flights.... the walk to the gate alone can take almost 20 minutes

I might want to allow a little bit more than hanuman is suggesting, just because "things can/and sometimes DO happen." You really don't need 3 hours leeway in my opinion. It is a domestic flight, after all... not an international one.

I could not find a flight that depart BKK at 13.40 for CEI(Chiang Rai). The nearest TG flight is 13.20 and Air Asia at 11.35. Please check your flight time again.
I fly domestic weekly and with luggage I find I have plenty of time if I arrive 1 hour before the departure time. But as Bob and Carol have suggested you can always get there earlier if you wish and hang.

Worth noting the 6th is a holiday (Chakri Day). Traffic will probably be light, but unpredictable. It's advisable to be at the airport 1 hour before a domestic flight, so I usually leave home about 2 hours before, even though it usually only takes 30 to 45 minutes to get to the airport from my place.

I'm worse than Bob about airport times. We always get there way ahead of time and just hang out. For a domestic flight, we will typically arrive 2 hours ahead. That means Bob's suggestion of leaving your hotel 3 hours is dead on. Almaost all the time we wait and wait and get on the plane without any anxiety whatsoever. In very rare instances, our psychosis is rewarded through the flexibility that we retain. For instance, in Shanghai, we managed to smoothly make all our connections even though we went to the wrong airport. Extra time covers a lot of stupid mistakes.
