How long are these flights to China?
I have never been able to do math word problems so this has me stumped. I leave Los Angeles on Nov 1st at 12:30AM and arrive in Seoul on Nov 2nd at 5:20AM. I then leave Seoul on Nov 2nd at 8:45AM and arrive in Shanghai on Nov 2nd at 9:40AM. I am on a tour and don't have tickets yet that might tell me how long the flights are. Can you help?
Going home I leave Hong Kong on Nov 17th at 12:25PM, arrive in Seoul at 5:00PM. Leave Seoul at 9:30PM and arrive back in LA at 3:25PM still on the 17th. How long are these flights?
I appreciate any math expertise I can get.

You don't have to be good at math, Babs; you just have to go to the operating airline's web site (or pretty much any travel web site), find the flight, then click the button that gives info about the flight.
LA to Seoul, for example, is 13h10m.

Seoul is 16 hours ahead of PDT (November 1, 2008 is still daylight savings time). So, when you board you plane at 12:30a, it's already 4:30p in Seoul. Since you're scheduled to arrive at 5:20a next morning, the scheduled time is 12hr50min.
[Having said that, I don't see a flight on 11/1 with that schedule. A Korean Air flight departs 12:10am and arrives 5:20a+1. A Asiana flight departs 12:30a and arrives 6:00a.]
Beijing is an hour behind Seoul. So, when your flight departs at 8:45a, it's only 7:45a in Beijing. Your flight is therefore 1hr55min.
Seoul is also an hour ahead of Hong Kong. When your flight departs HK at 12:25p, it's 1:25p in Seoul. So, your flight is 3hr35min.
Finally, November 17 is back to Standard Time in the US, so LA is 17 hours behind Seoul. When you board your flight at 9:30p, it's 4:30a LA time that morning. Your flight is therefore 10hr55min to arrive LAX at 3:25p same day.
The eastbound Trans-Pacific flight is significantly shorter than westbound because of prevailing wind.

Listen to how the doctor handles these long flights to Asia. I usually order a double Scotch on the rocks as soon as I get on the plane. If it is a single malt Scotch, I'll order 2 more. During the main meal, I'll have 2 glasses of red wine. After dinner, I'll order 2 double Amaretto on the rocks. The flights just seem to fly by, Don't worry about the Korean Air flight times changing. It's all part of the enjoyment in flying to China.
