How does travel insurance cover airfare reimbursement

Not Asia-related at all--and I've listed on the "correct" board...but technically cheating here since I only trust some of my Asia board Fodorites' opinions:

You might want to ask this on the Air Travel board.

And have you been following this thread?

It is my understanding that while DAN may repatriate your remains, it will NOT

[aargh, wrong key combination]

it will NOT repatriate your alive but damaged body. It just gets you to the nearest hospital.

Thanks, thursdaysd. I'm comfortable with the level of coverage I have between my insurance plan and my DAN coverage. My question is not so much about repratriaton but rather specifically in regards to airfare coverage.

Not true. It will get you to the nearest appropriate facility... And that could be home. You may remember that GPanda went to Hong Kong while he was receiving experimental treatment for his malignant brain tumor. He called and talked with DAN and they said that under those circumstances, if he needed med evac, they would send him home.

"Appropriate" is one of those phrases that can have different meanings to different people. And DAN specifically told me that they would not have paid for me to go home early from Switzerland when I broke my wrist, while my tenweb insurance did pay.

I think the answer to filmwill's question is that all policies are different, and you need to read the fine print, and possibly call the company.

<when you book an airfare (in this case internal flights within the country we're visiting) and you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, is your full airfare covered/reimbursable?>

As I said on the other board...Yes, this is standard for cancellation policies as long as you've included the cost of those flights. We recently received reimbursement for our internal flights when we had to cancel a trip to Peru.

<I'm comfortable with the level of coverage I have between my insurance plan and my DAN coverage.>

Also, with the right comprehensive coverage for individual trips you don't need DAN because you can choose a comprehensive policy that covers evacuation to your hospital of choice.

I had to cancel my trip to Paris in 2012, due to parent illness, and got back 75%., I think it was, of my airfare with whatever insurance policy I had bought on www.insuremytrip.com. I use them for my overseas trips, but sometimes use different companies from trip to trip.

Happy Travels!
