Hours Of Subway
 

Hi,

Living in NYC I'm used to 24/7 subway service. Do the subways/trains run 24/7 in Tokyo? If not, what are the hours of operation? Also, is there an alternative (besides a taxi) if there is no subway service? Only 6 days 2 hours and 36 minutes till take off :)

On my first day in Japan I was surprised to find that the subways closed early and I had to take a taxi back to my hotel. I just checked some online schedules (hyperdia.com) and it looks like their hours of operation are starting at 4AM to 5AM and ending at midnight to 1AM. Found a new site that mentions a 1-day open ticket at 710 yen:

Thanks so much for that information, it's kind of hard to believe that a city the size of Tokyo doesn't have 24/7 subways. Oh well !!

btw.. would anyone happen to know the subway line and the stop for the Tsukiji Fish Market?

Many subways systems shut down at night to do regular inspection/maintenance/cleaning work. For example, the MTR in Hong Kong only runs from 6am to about 1am.

It is surprising for one of the 2 or 3 largest cities in the world. I think that is it something like 10% of the 200 million Japanese that live in the Tokyo- Yokohama metro region.

The answer to your last question, officer, is: yes, one of us would be able to tell you what subway stop to use for Tsukiji.

hai! bob-san, the hibiya line will take you to tsukiji fish market. i think it will cost you about $1.80. the station stop is tsukiji. once you get out of the station, there will be signs to guide you, or just ask, and i am sure someone will help you. the market is only about a 8-10 min. walk from the station. what a place. if you don't want to eat sushi, then at least have a bowl of ramen there. ask for cold sake to wash it down, as you won't be the only one sipping so early in the am.

It is baseball season over there, you know, and the grand sumo tournament in Tokyo is Sept 12 through 26.

If you are going to Tsukiji and want to see the best part (Tuna auctions) you can not take the subway. You need to go very early (~5AM) before the subway opens. Take a taxi there and subway back.

There's plenty to see at Tsukiji. I don't think you have to go before 5am. I got there at 7am and was accompanied by 2 Japanese chefs and had a great time. We had sushi and beer for breakfast which was also great.

I would also second the suggestion of catching Japanese baseball game. It is quite an experience whether you like baseball, or not. You can find my description of a Swallows game in Tokyo and a Hanshin Tigers game by the search function. Have a great time.
