Hotels on harbor

We have not been to Hong Kong in and love the harbor. What are the best ones? Forgot if we want Kowloon side?

The Kowloon side has the classic view of the harbor - look ay the Intercontinental, the Pen and the top floors of the Sheraton. But there are lovely views from the Hong Kong side as well - just not the view of the Hong Kong skyline reflected in the harbor.

For a view to die for try the Ritz Carlton.

What is your budget? The Salisbury YMCA (not a typical Y but a full fledged hotel) has truly amazing harbor views from many of its room.

The view that you see in all the photos is from the Kowloon side looking toward the Hong Kong Island side; it's arguably the world's most spectacular cityscape. The best (i.e., closest and most unobstructed) view of this is from the InterContinental Hong Kong; the Peninsula, the Kowloon Shangri-La, and (to a lesser extent) the 16th and 17th floors of the Sheraton also have excellent views of the HK Island skyline.

The Ritz view of the harbor is spectacular because of its height. Many of the harbor view rooms at the Ritz don't include the Hong Kong Island skyline, but even those are exceptional. Biggest downside of the Ritz is its location by the Airport Express station -- unlike most other hotels, you won't step out the front door and be in the midst of an interesting part of the city.

On the HK Island side, the best hotels on or very close to the harbor are the Mandarin Oriental and the Four Seasons. The Kowloon Shangri-La, the Conrad, and the JW Marriott are all in the same complex that also includes a shopping mall, set a bit further back from the harbor. They're all very good hotels and convenient to everywhere, but none offer the classic harbor views as do those from the Kowloon side.

we stayed at the Salisbury [aka the HK YMCA] and if we hadn't know it was a YMCA, we wouldn't have known, if you know what i mean - it was just like a hotel.

we had a comfortable and spacious room, decent bathroom, and a great view over the harbour. plus it was very reasonably priced.

Very easy to get to - we got the train from the airport to Kowloon central, then the free hotel bus to the back of the Peninsular. there is a metro station just 50 yards from the door and the star ferry is about 500 ms away.

an absolute bargain!

Intercontinental and Shangri la, Hong Kong, if you are looking for unprecedented views of the harbor, these are the places to be at. These are priced a bit high so checking the budget would be a good idea.
