hotels near Tanjong Pagar rail station

We arrive in Singapore late at night and getting the train to Kuala lumpur the next morning. we would like to stay somewhere near to the station thats clean and not too expensive.

We are also coming back to Singapore a few weeks later and would like to stay in a hotel that is central to shopping and sites thats not too expensive. Can you reccomend a good hotel?

Thanks in advance

What is your budget? The Amara is very close, I haven't stayed but seen it when I went once to 'try' and get a train to KL am just guessing here but I would say probably around US$80. There will be many suggestions for Singapore hotels for your longer stays, we recently stayed at the Crown Prince on Orchard Road, it's good value and very convenient, close to MRTs, costs about SGD 140, roughly US$ 80 a night.

Fourth attempt to post, let's see..

Amari is very close to the station, should be about US$80. For longer stay we stayed just before Christmas at the Crown Prince, right on orchard Road, again about US$80 a night, very convenient, easy, good service.

Hi jess23, like JamesA said, the nearest hotels to the train station are Amara and M hotel. Both are business hotels since it's in the CBD. The Amara has just had a facelift and it's about a 5 min walk from the station. The M hotel is a little further down. You will have no problems walking to these hotels even late at night 'cos the streets in Singapore are very safe.
When you return to Singapore again, a few reasonably priced hotels (about SGD150) along Orchard road include: hotel phoenix, crown prince and orchard hotel. Orchard Road is the major shopping area.

As soon as you step out of the MRT station, you go up the escalator/stairs(?) and go left and there's the Amara Hotel. One of the best Thai restaurants in Singapore is inside that hotel. It's called Thanying Thai restaurant. I eat there regularly. Happy Travels!

Hi Guenmai,
I think jess23 is referring to the malayan railway train station and not the MRT station. BTW, if you're back in Singapore, you would like to know that Thanying's owner has left and opened a new restaurant last november called sabai in ngee ann city. I just had lunch there a week ago and the food is absolutely delicious and very authentic. Check out this link for a review of this place http://food.asia1.com.sg/gdfd/res_20041219_001.shtml

Murff...thanks for the restaurant update. So do you mean that Thanying restaurant has totally closed down in the Amara Hotel? I ate at the new Thanying Express just in August that's located at the B2 level of Takashimaya Department store at Ngee Ann City.It was great. I love Thanying's food and have been eating at them for years. There used to be one at Clarke's Quay, but it's closed, too. The main one is in BK off of Silom in an old house. There used to be one in the World Trade Center Shopping Center in Bangkok, but last August I went there and was told it had closed. So, I think the owner/company is regrouping or something.Happy Travels!

Hi Guenmai, both thanyings are still around. Sabai is at level 4 near the post office with prices about the same as thanying. They also offer the buffet dessert spread. Hmmm, I might just pop down this weekend for lunch :)

Murff...Did Sabai restaurant take Sanur Indonesian restaurant's space?I think that was the name of the restaurant. Sanur is on the 4th level near the post office so I was wondering if they had closed down and vacated their space? I never noticed lots of people in Sanur. I use the post office there a lot and walk by it.Happy Travels!

Hi Guenmai: no, Sanur restaurant is still there. For good indonesian food, you should head to Tambuah Mas at either Tanglin shopping centre or the new one at Paragon. Sabai took over another thai restaurant called renn thai which has since moved to suntec city opposite the fountain. Cheers.
