Hotels in Tokyo - special needs
 

Hi everyone, my son and I are planning af trip to Tokyo. My son is 12 and has high functioning autism - aspergers syndrom. This means that some of our travelling days probably will be used to zone off all the stress and many inputs of the day.

We are going to stay for 10-12 days and would require a good spacious hotel room, and one that is within walking distance from a train station (preferably Tokyo Central Railway Station). Our budget for the hotel is max 2.000 USD and this would be for a room for two people.

We will be using the hotel as a base, and will only go for overnight stays in other places of Japan.

Can you recommend a good place?

Let me also say that for your son, Tokyo may be total overload. It is overload for many people. If it was me (and it isn't) I'd choose another place in Japan to base yourselves. A place that is quieter, calmer. And I'd choose a place with a big park in the area.

Do you need a kitchenette? If so, look at Citidines - they have a number of properties in Tokyo.

I was wondering about that as well. Well will be in Tokyo for the 1st time next month and am thinking of a hustling, bustling place with lots of neon and people of course. It's like 18 mil. population of something like that. Will that be too much for your son?

I have no recommendations re: hotel but I think the area on the west side of Tokyo Station - I guess that's Marunouchi - near the Imperial Palace Gardens would be quiet and convenient....maybe very expensive though - there seems to be a lot of office buildings and designer stores but much quieter than an area like Shinjuku where I always get lost. Why don't you check on hotels.com - you can specify a landmark for a search and Tokyo Station is one of them....

Although Tokyo is indeed a sensory overload, one positive thing about it that I believe may be of help to your son is that the Japanese are enormously respectful of personal space and personal privacy, even in a city of so many people.

Many of the main stations have a park within short distance (if your son finds such places restful, this is a lovely idea) and all should have hotels that would match your requirements.

May first be worthwhile deciding which area/ main station would suit you best - Tokyo/ Maranouchi, Shinjuku, Ueno, Asakusa, Shibuya -- and then ask for the hotels nearby that would best fulfill your needs?
