Hotels in Bejing

I will be meeting my hubby who is stationed in Iraq for a wonderful 17 days in China. We are starting out in Bejing, but we have not idea of which part of town is the best to stay in and which part to avoid. Can anyone offer adivse on this?
Thank you so much!

Can anyone please help with this?

Best part is Wangfujing. Many 3* to 5* hotels in that area. Plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, and relatively short taxi ride to most sites, and kind of walkable from Tiananmen Square.

Look into the French run Novotel Peace Hotel in Wanfujing mentioned by rkkwan.

If you're not going in high season see if you can get a deal at the Peninsula. You both certainly deserve the best.

There is a lot of information on this forum on hotels in Beijing. Type "hotels in Beijing" in search of this forum, you should find additional information.

Crown Plaza hotel is a good choice - nice bar - nice rooms - good choice for breakfast and a super Korean restaurant just across the road we stayed here in December 2006

Another vote for the Crowne Plaza Wangfujing, we got a got a great rate from the offical website for a Club room which included breakfast in the executive lounge or restuarant, free mini bar drinks & fruit, cocktails & finger foods in the executive lounge each evening, free internet etc etc.

We plan on returning to Beijing next year and will stay here again.

If you can afford it, the Peninsula is the best.

Another alternative is the haoyuan bed and breakfast inn, located in a historic hutong district. It's lovely, and only a 2 block walk to Wangfujing. We found staying here really enhanced our experience, rather than choosing a large hotel. You can rent bicycles and explore the hutongs on your own. You can arrange any tour you'd be interested in taking through their front desk. We stayed there in 2004, in a suite, and it was around $110. Go for the suite if you can, the extra room was wonderful.
