Hotel recos please in Tokyo under $300/nt
 

Hi, we are a family with a 4 year old visiting Tokyo for pleasure for the first time. It's a last-minute decision to add Tokyo as a stopover, we are leaving in a month. Please recommend best hotel options for under $300/nt. The kid is used to long flights and tend to do fine. Also accustomed to crowded cities as we live in NYC. It will be our first trip there for fun, won't try to do too much and squeeze in everything. Don't need to be in the most central touristy location as long as we are not too far out. Searching on tripadvisor also. Appreciate any suggestions. Thank you very much.

Niwa, Hyatt Regency, Grand Arc Hanzomon perhaps?

Virtuoso member hotels offer benefits like breakfast, f & b credit and upgrades that might make the extra cost worthwhile. Plus most have pools which may be nice for the little one.

Citadines in Shinjuku....about 120.00 per night for a apt room with mini kitchen

The Citadines are booked out well in advance and you will be lucky to get something. The Conrad might also have something given that you really need a double room with perhaps a roll-in bed. Try tokyo-apartments if you want an apartment type where you are located close to a station.

Thanks for all the suggestions, looking at them now. To add more details, we love Japanese food and don't plan to cook. We used to stay in VRBO rentals when daughter was younger and we preferred to cook some meals or at least have a fridge for milk and a microwave. For this trip, a kitchenette would be nice but not essential. We will only be staying 4 nights, the kid doesn't need milk at arm's reach anymore and we can buy pastries the night before for her to chow down in the morning before heading out for real breakfast.

I seem to be booking very late in the game and many hotels have no vacancies. Any opinions on the New Otani Tokyo and the Washington Shinjuku? They have avails for our dates.

Washington Shinjuku is in a poor location, a very long way from subway. Grand Hyatt in Roppongi is in ideal location for seeing sites in all parts of town, if within your budget.

We recently stayed at the Century Southern Hotel and it was great. We had a superior room and it cost about $200 incl all tax and fees. The locations was also very convenient.

As far as location, there are several good ones. Tokyo is huge (much bigger than Manhattan). The most important thing is to have easy access to public transportation.

I second Century Southern, we did 2 nights there last year, thought it an excellent location and decent hotel too. We didn't eat any meals there, so can't comment on breakfast/ dining options.

As far as meals at the Century Southern, there are many options nearby. We only ate at a hotel restaurant once, for breakfast the morning after Typhoon Wipha. It was similar to a Marriott type buffet, including omelet bar, and some more traditional Japanese options. It cost about $25.

Right outside, down the walkway, there are several options for a quick breakfast, including a very good Boulanger, and a Starbucks that opens extra early (comes in handy if you are going on a day trip, and want breakfast to go for an early train ride). The Takashimaya store across the way where the has lots of restaurants on the top 3 floors, some of which are very good (at least of those we tried). The lower level has a huge food market with many "to go" options as well. Also in the hotel building (but not part of hotel) there are a few other restaurant options, on the lower floors. We ate at the Japanese place, on 2nd or 3rd floor. It was very nice.

Yeah, we opted to go to local bakeries etc. for breakfast and there's plenty around for dinner, of course.

I love that department store restaurants are such a great option in Japan. In the UK, restaurants in shopping malls and department stores are weak, likewise you don't expect to find great food in train stations, whereas in Japan, it's nearly all good!
