Hotel near Shinagawa train station
I'm taking the train from Kyoto to the Shinagawa train station and need a hotel in the $150 range near the station. Any suggestions? I'm staying near the train station so the next day I can take the train to the Narita airport for an evening flight. BTW, do I want to buy a special pass to go from Kyoto to the Shinagawa train station?; and then from the Shinagawa train station the next day to Narita airport?
At the airport I'll pick up a larger suitcase, which I will have shipped from Kyoto; and then fly home to the United States on Sunday. I depart for Japan in 9 days so would like to book a hotel in a day or two. If someone has a suggestion for me to stay other than near the Shinagawa train station for relatively easy access to Narita airport, I'm open to suggestions; and the name of any hotels. Thanks. |
The Strings and the Prince Hotels are very close to Shinagawa Station - don't know the prices. Also close by is the inexpensive Toyoko Inn.
If you don't have a JR Pass, all you need is to buy one ticket from Kyoto to Shinagawa and then another one on the N'Ex from Shinagawa to NRT. |
I did a search using "Shinagawa Station" on booking.com, and selected a random date in October. Click on the link below to see what I found around $150. The Shinagawa Prince seems to be the closest to the station of this group.

Thank you, thank you and thank you, Mara and Russ. That's why I love the Fodor site and have used it for Europe and Newfoundland. Mara, I do not have a JR pass. Ought I to buy one? What would be the approx. difference between that and my buying one tix from Kyoto to Shinagawa, and then one tix on the N'E from Shinagawa to NRT?
Some info; I'll be in Tokyo (my first trip) from Oct. 9-12 by myself and, given that from previous trips to Asia, it takes me two days to adjust to the time, I expect I'll spend that time exploring Tokyo--though I may, may, take one day trip. On Oct. 13, I'll meet a tour group in Toyko and travel with them by train and bus around the country--which will have its good and bad points, like all tours, from Oct. 13-22, the last three days in Kyoto. The tour flies home, but I stay for Oct. 23 in Kyoto and then, per your and Russ's suggestions, leave Kyoto on Oct. 24 for a hotel near the Shinagawa station. And then on the 25th of Oct. to NRT. Excuse the detail, but it relates to my question: given my itinerary, do you or Russ think I ought to by a Japan Rail pass or just buy one tix from Kyoto to Shinagawa and another to NRT. I'm always so impressed with the contributors to Fodor, regardless of the region of the world: it's a great club to which I'm proud to belong and, though I've been to 48 countries--Japan will be 49--I'm not in the class of you all. Here's one more thanks for everyone you two--and your comrades on the site--help time and time again, place and place again, hotel and hotel again. |
Russ, thanks for the hotel link and the previous info. I'm fading out, got a flu shot today, but will check out, and book a hotel tomorrow. Best, RC

No, you won't need a pass for that...just the two tickets.

The Strings is an InterContinental group hotel and an excellent place to stay, but it's unlikely to have a room for $150.
I believe there are 2 different Prince hotels at Shinagawa, both right across the street from the Takanawa exit of the station -- the Shinagawa Prince and the Grand Prince. There's also a Sheraton in the neighborhood. If you're looking for a budget hotel near the station, the Toyoko Inn is probably a good choice. (Of all these hotels, I've stayed only at the Strings.) |
