Hotel Near Great Wall Mutianyu
Hi,
We are planning our trip to China (April 2010) I know i'm a little early but it takes time to get organized.
I read from previous posts that it takes about 1&1/2 hours to get from Beijing to Mutianyu with most pickups after 8:30am. I was wondering if anyone have suggestions about a place to stay near Mutianyu, our goals are:
* Avoid the morning drive
* Take advantage of the Sunrise & or Sunset @ Mutianyu (we don't mind getting up early)
I did found some hotels on http://www.mutianyugreatwall.net/ however they are a little on the expensive side. We are looking arround the low $100 lower US dollar rage.
Also, i found a couple of sites on the web about visiting unrestored parts of the great wall like Jiankou but there is not enough info available. If anyone can share their experience it will be apreciated.
Thanks
Johan

The website you quote is merely a marketing vehicle for a series of overpriced cottage-style hotels, set up by their foreign owner, with expat- and inexperience-foreigner-targeting rates.
There are other more typically Chinese guesthouses at Mutianyu, no doubt not remotely as luxurious, and some quite primitive, but not more than US$50 at the most. See the actual official Mutianyu site, http://www.mutianyu.com, with images of "Mountain Lodge of Great Wall', apparently a conventional Chinese hotel.
But note that the Wall here doesn't open until 7am (8am later in the year) and so may not be your best choice for dawn viewing. If you're going to spend a night at the Wall you'd be better to go further afield for more atmospheric sections with fewer visitors, far more realistic room rates, and open 24 hours, so that you can climb any time you like. Jin Shan Ling would be the obvious choice. At the entrance here there's the Jǐn Shān Bīnguǎn (0314 883 0222, www.cdchangcheng.com) with assorted rooms from ¥260 to ¥400 (but will accept ¥180) in new traditional courtyard house, mock Mongolian yurt, and conventional hotel style. You can walk to the base of the Wall from here.
Hope that helps.

Most guide books cover Jin Shan Ling these days. The website actually appears to have many of its links broken now and you'll do better elsewhere anyway. Using the search box on this site will find you accounts of visiting there. The room rates published differ from those quoted, but only because they always do. You show up; you bargain; you stay. You'll find descriptions of Jinshanling here with a little creative use of the search box, e.g.:
