You might want to see when the new airport actually opens, so that you book a hotel near the airport in operation by the end of November. Or book something refundable.

The Thailand experts will know more about dates and hotels. I've only heard that the change is coming...

loves is right. The new airport is scheduled to open next month, but I wouldn't make any reservations until you know for sure which airport will be used. I'll be flying in and out of Bangkok in November and I still figure it's 50/50 which airport will be in use.

The 'test' flights on saturday went off fine, it is still looking 'ok' for Sept 28th, end November I think almost without doubt will be the new airport.

The Novotel at the new airport is connected to terminals by walkway, it is going to be about B 5,500 a night.

What time do you arrive on the 30th? If not late then perhaps just head downtown.

For reference you might want to note for Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport for discounted Novotel rates, although the rate seems to be about B 5,500 a night and that is more than you would expect to pay downtown it is 'not so bad' when you compare with the rates for the Amari Airport hotel at Don Muang ( which is the current airport ) for a hotel with direct walkway access to terminal.

Put in Bangkok and it lists their BKK properties.

Good for last minute other Novotels in Thailand, we got about B 990 for the Novotel Chiang Mai ( about USD 25 )which was 'real' cheap !

I'm sorry but I'm not aware of the construction at the Bankok airport. Is it closed or whats going on? Just looking for something close and clean so I can get to my (early)flight. Already have my ticket and sure they would'nt sell a ticket to a closed airport.

the old bkk airport is being shut down....a totally new one has been built....it is in a completely different part of the city, more towards pattaya (east) than the current airport which is to the north of bangkok...it has experienced some delays in opening and is currently scheduled to open at the end of september, 2006.....there is very little in the way of services (hotels) thus far in the area and the novotel is about all at this point....so none of the existing hotels near the current airport of any use to travelers as they are very far away...

Kathie Aug 2nd, 2006 05:37 AM

dale, the old airport is designated BKK. When the new airport opens, the old airport will close and the new airport will be designated BKK.

Thanks much for the help! I have reservations at the Amari Watergate for three days when I first get to BKK then will leave for Cambodia do you think its to far away from the new airport or what would you suggest? Thanks for all your help.

no that is smack in the middle of town...perfect location....you will just have to leave a little earlier to get to the new airport when you depart...

i would prefer a river location for a first time visitor but the amari is an ok location, but not near to the skytrain.....you will need a taxi to get everyplace...

what is your rate at that hotel? is it cheap? if not i would consider another hotel more adajacent to the skytrain...

amari is not a BAD choice however, don't get me wrong, you just might be able to do better nearer to the skytrain...

The new airport Novotel would be about B 5,500 ( about USD 145 ) but although a high price note that it is a walkway through from the terminal so apart from the 'ease' you also would not have the expense of taxi to go downtown or taxi back to the airport, If you are on an 0640 flight ( ? NW/UA? )you would have to 'get up' halfway thru the night to head back to the airport to check-in if you were downtown.

In this case I would say USD 145 is not 'too bad' being able to go straight to the hotel and not having to rush or worry about getting back to the airport on time.

Everything is still 'go' for Sept 28th, you are due 2 months after that, I am guessing here but Novotel is a large group ( Accor, same as Sofitel ) and they have 3 other Novotel's in Bangkok and in the very very unlikely event that the new airport was not operating I would be surprised if they did not allow you simply to 'swop' for one of the other Novotels.

I don't think at this moment in time you need to 'rush' getting a booking but if you check back here I and others do our best to update whatever we can say about the opening date, but as I said it still is looking like 28th sept will be open.

There 'is' another Novotel in the area, about 20 minutes away, around the USD 80 range but you would have to allow for the journey time to/from terminal plus taxi fare etc.

What time do you 'arrive' in Bangkok on 30th?

Thanks for all your help. Fodors is such a great resource for this type of information and everyone is so helpful. I've stayed at Watergate before but was unaware of the airport situation. I arrive from Siem Reap at 10:45 on the 30th but leave (UAL) back to chicago on Dec. 1st at 6:40 a.m. Thats my problem I leave so early that I don't want to miss my flight or get up at 1:oo a.m. to beat the traffic. I think Watergate is to far away fromt the airport whatdo you guys think?

rhkkmk Aug 2nd, 2006 06:41 AM

we used to stay out by the old airport for our 6AM flights home....more recently we have choosen to bite the bullet and stay in town instead...get up at 3AM and leave the hotel at 3:30 for the 6 flight....easy to airport at that time....but that is the old airport....the new airport is slightly further out, so i would maybe suggest one nite at the novotel for you at the new airport....make a res now that can be cancelled and then see what airport is going to service your flight...

you can always make a res out by the old airport at the last minute if the new one has not opened for some reason...

JamesA Aug 2nd, 2006 08:36 AM

As Bob says, with the old/current aiport it's quite different, if you are getting in almost 11 pm and take-off is 0640 I really would go for the Novotel at the Airport. With that longaul 0640 you want some comfort that night.

here's some good news!

I had a look on that link, the 'unrestricted' booking is only B 5,000 ( USD 131 ) but I don't think it appears to include tax/service, it's a little vague on that point, however excluding breakfast so you can same the breakfast cost of B 900 ( about USD 24 ) because you will be off to check in ( other will tell you how early for UA/NW ) about 4.30 am so no point paying that high amount for breakfast.

That rate can be cancelled up to 1 day before arrival at no charge !

So you've got nothing to loose and you can relax.

This is useful as I cannot imagine how many time all this will come up in the next month or so, so it's good we can find this all out.

JamesA Aug 2nd, 2006 08:39 AM

And that 'unresticted' rate is only about 3 bucks more than a 'resticted/no change/no cancelation' deal !
