Keiko, I know nothing of the Peace Hotel. However we stayed at the JC Manderin with what was touted as a 5 star hotel. Nice building, The hotel staff and restaurant staff were terrible. I have had better service at McDonalds. So at least you can stear clear of them.

We stayed at Peace Hotel a couple of years ago. The location is very good--you can hear the music broadcast on the Bund (I get tired of the noise), walk under street to the Bund, walk along main shopping street. We even walked to the museum and with enough time could have walked to the old town and garden, but did that in van on a day tour. The streets/sidewalks are packed with people so it is rather slow going. The hotel is old and looks its age in places. Our room was excellent--I think a delux--still not a standardized room like in American chains. The staff was not very helpful and the continental breakfast was horrible. I think that is true for many hotels in China.

In the opinion of many the Grand Hyatt is the best hotel in Shanghai, occupying the top floors of China's tallest building and with correspondingly marvellous views, pollution and humidity permitting. I've stayed there two or three times.<BR><BR>Service levels are as good as can be found anywhere in China.<BR><BR>The hotel is right next to a metro station, and a few minutes' walk from a choice of two ferries which will take you to the Bund. There are also multiple buses from a nearby street which will take you elsewhere in Shanghai. It's not inconvenient at all.<BR><BR>Peter N-H<BR>http://members.axion.net/~pnh/China.html

I think the Hyatt and St. Regis are the best hotels in Shanghai right now (better than the Portman Ritz Carlton), but the newly opened Four Seasons might be a contender too. Both the Hyatt and St. Regis are located in Pudong and have subway stations nearby. I always try to take the subway because it's convenient, cheap, and most importantly fast. The service standards are very high at both hotels. For tourists, I would say the Hyatt has a slight edge over the St. Regis due to its gorgeous Bund views and dining/entertainment options. Hope this helps.

Another hotel you might consider if you really want to be in the middle of things is the Sofitel Hyland - it's right in the pedestrian section of Nanjing Road. I have not stayed there and it's not up to the same level of the properties I mentioned above but the location couldn't be more central for sightseeing. I know the rooms are on the smallish side.

I mentioned my post to my husband and he agreed with the assessment of the Peace Hotel, but reminded me of the history of the place. That does give it attraction if you want history, location, and cleanliness, and just not great food or service. He also liked the ATM right next door though it was in a glass lobby so people on the street stopped to watch us get money out.<BR><BR>We stopped in the Sofitel one night and ate a light Western meal for a change overlooking the lights and shoppers below--it was a nice break and I agree it would be a good central location.
