hotel in Georgetown, Penang
Please recommend a centrally located hotel in Georgetown. E&O and the G hotel are out of the budget.
Besides Traders, is there any other recommendation. Traders is supposed to be 'dated' and Evergreen has not got good reviews on trip advisor. Thanks! |
i stayed at the traders a few weeks ago, and yes, it is dated, but still a very nice property. i got a room on the trader club level, which included breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening cocktails with pupus.
i got it on agoda for $90usd. its next to a local mall and the bus station, and convenient to other parts of town. a taxi ride to anywhere in town will cost between 10-15 mrg.(bargin). i think the g and evergreen are in the gurney drive area, not really "in town". |
I recommend the Bayview, a few metres from the E&O end of Penang Road (Bayview overlooks the E&O). About $55US a night including breakfast. Breakfast is a bit quirky, but the place is very central. Drink at the E&O, sleep at the Bayview. Most rooms have good to great views.

Bayview or Traders?
Is Traders a much better hotel than Bayview? If that is the case, I would rather take a 15mins. walk and live in a nicer hotel. Bayview does not have good reviews on tripadvisor. Also, are they hawker stalls near Traders? |
Traders is more upmarket, but at the dead end of Penang Road. Chulia Street has great hawker stalls at night about half way down, but there are similarly good hawker stalls at the Traders/Komtar area also. Bayview is more in the three star range - might be a bit down market for some. You will love the Penang experience from either.

you can walk to penang road and mccalister road for loads of hawker food, and very delicious food at that. as a matter of fact, during our four day stay in penang, other than breakfast at the hotel, we ate at hawker stalls, except for the last nite, where we went to a "proper" restaurant.

Try the Tune Hotelhttp://www.pulau-pangkor.com/tunehotel is a good and cheap alternative. If you want it cheaper, I like the Good Hope Inn: http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/good-hope-inn.html Nice staff, very central. Good choice.

Thinking of Penang side trip while in Sinapore. Is 5 nights to long a stay in Penang? Suggestions
|
Five nights is a nice stay in Penang. We spent 6, many people would be happy with 4. Do stay at the E&O if you can and try out lots of hawker food.
Have you read my trip report from a few years ago? Click on my name and look under trip reports. |
Kathie, thanks. Yes, I have read your report and several others on this site. I know you like the E&O but, I am looking at the G Hotel. I just posted several questions that I have about Panang.
We are going to Singapore and thought Penang would be a good additional stop. I hate to travel that far for only a short visit. |
We loved our entire stay in Singapore and Malaysia. Here is my report with a few restaurant recs. I would go back to Penang anytime. The food is amazing.
