Hong Kong Trip

After taking an escorted tour of China (I'll be solo), I've decided to fly from Shanghai to Hong Kong and see it on my own. What are you thoughts of:
1 - flying on Dragon Airlines or China Eastern?
2 - Staying at the Salisbury YMCA with a room that has a harbor view?
3 - Is 2 1/2 days long enough to see the major sites in Hong Kong?
The add-on Hong Kong part is very expensive to add on a tour and I've gone to Europe by myself and think I'd be o.k. in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is very easy to do on your own. There is absolutely no need for a tour. You'll do fine.

Either Dragon Air or China Eastern should be fine.

The Salisbury YMCA gets rave reviews. Hotels in Hong Kong are expensive. The Salisbury is the way to get a good room for a decent price.

I don't think 2.5 days is enough for Hong Kong. I'd suggest at leat four days for Hong Kong. And add another day if you'd like a day trip to Macau (which I recommend).

I might be able to stay another day in Hong Kong but I have to get back to work and I'd already be gone 2 weeks. I thought about going to Macau. I live in Vegas so even though I'd like to see the casinos, I won't go there for that.

I wouldn't go to Macau for the casinos. Even if all you do is visit the ruins of the cathedral and teh fort, walk the cobbled streets of the center of the old town and eat at Fernando's, it's worth the visit. But if 3.5 days is the most you can stretch your time to, I'd stay in Hong Kong.

If you are returning to Shanghai after visiting Hong Kong, Dragonair offers Shanghai to Hong Kong SUPERCITY 3d/2n packages. I find the package price is usually cheaper than if I booking air and hotel separately, even when I travel solo. The package includes round trip coach transfer between HK airport and hotel. Do add an extra night if you have time. http://www.cxholidays.com/chl/en_CN/r/homepage

If prices are similar, I'll take Dragonair (subsidiary of Cathay Pacific) over China Eastern.

2.5 days is okay for Hong Kong for the major sites. It's a relatively small place.

Like Kathie says, Macau is much more than casinos. But if just 2.5 days for Hong Kong, skip Macau this time.
