Hong Kong - Rugby Sevens
Hi all,
My partner and I were thinking of a 10 day trip to Hong Kong in March next year from the 3rd-16th roughly. We are slightly hesitant as the Rugby Seven's is on the week after or so and we cant book straight away but don't want to pay through the roof for flights and accommodation when it does come time! Has anyone been during or around this time and have advice or tips? Or are we over thinking the idea too much? Cheers. |
My wife went on a shopping trip to Hong Kong last year and it was during the Rugby 7s. Flights were fuller than normal but if you make an earlier enough reservation it shouldn't be a problem. Same goes for hotels but it ends there - malls, shops and restaurant not in the vicinity of the stadium felt and looked the same as normal.
Book your hotels and flights early and you should be fine. |
We were also there during the Rugby Sevens last year - except for the crowds in the bars around the mid-levels, we wouldn't have known it was going on.

While I agree that I don’t think you will notice crowds, you may end up paying more for hotels than in other weeks in March, as the 7s are a big event for rugby fans, esp in Singapore and Australia. I also have to say that March is really the WORST time weather-wise here: damp, foggy and prone to rain. March is one of the months I try not to be here if I can. If you have a choice, Feb and April would be better IMO, in terms of weather. Of course if you really have a choice, November and December are ideal in terms of weather and Jan is usually OK too. The summer, which starts in April and ends in mid-October, is hot, humid and rainy, but from about June through mid-September the air is usually far clear than in the winter as the winds come from the west and keep the PRC pollution out of Hong Kong. So it’s a toss-up. But really, March is generally not good weather. Unless you are interested in going to the matches, I would pick another time.

Thank you for the advice. Sadly this was the time that I have been allocated leave from work so I have to look around at some where that I can visit this time. Maybe I might have to give Hong Kong a miss, I have holidays again in September so maybe Ill take the journey then. Thank you!

While it wasn't beach weather, the weather was certainly fine when we were there from a tourism perspective (maybe we were just lucky). We had a lovely day with lunch outside at Stanley, we walked and walked everywhere, day and night. The only place it was cold-ish was at the Peak. So, it may not be ideal, but I wouldn't discount going then because of the weather.

We have decided to give this trip a miss for the mean time. Ill certainly be looking forward to going there when the next time arises!
