Hong Kong plus what other destination to round out 10 nite Asian visit?

original plan was Thailand but ... so looking instead to see Hong ,Kong, Macau,Hanoi and Halong Bay. Is it a good way to spend that time in mid Nov? Have free tkt to Hong Kong!

Hanoi will be coolish. Halong Bay may be too cold and wet to enjoy - or it may be ok - but don't expect warm, sunny weather. Hanoi has lots to recommend it. In 10 days, you could do just Hong Kong and Hanoi and have a fine trip.

Hong Kong and Bali would, I think, be a great combination. Five days (1 hotel) in each, perfect. The buzz of the city, relax in paradise.

how about HK & shanghai--easier travel

MmePerdu Jun 5th, 2014 02:07 PM

Shanghai would likely require a visa, depending on Andie's passport. So would Vietnam, although VN visas are generally less bother. Bali has a visa on arrival and combined with HKG would be easier in that way all around.

The distance and time to fly to Bali from Hong Kong deters me,despite its attraction. Shanghai is easier to get to but the weather in November may be an issue. Hanoi and Halong Bay should be warmer at that time of year. Yangshuo countryside no longer green but yellow and water level of Yi River is lower.
Would it still be as beautiful,to visit? Intrigued by all ....

With all the beautiful places to visit in Asia, for the short time you have, it seems to me the bother and expense of a visa would encourage you narrow it to places where a visa isn't required.

Closer than Bali, you mentioned Thailand and you could bypass Bangkok in favor of Chiang Mai and avoid the disruptions of BKK. There are likely direct flights to CM from HKG.

If you decide on Yangshuo, I'd recommend staying along the Yulong River rather than the Li, to avoid the hoards. The scenery is still the karst mountains and you can take a day trip on the Li for the famous (and likely crowded) boat trip if it's a "must".

Do you want beaches or other interests?

Bangkok/ Kanchanaburi for a mix of city and river town.

You could fly to Samui. Nice beaches. One side is touristy but the north west and west sides arent.

Krabi is very nice.

Kuching for animals and good city.

I would pick somewhere with good flights and no visa for a short trip.

Yangshuo... you can cross the border to Shenzhen and then take a sleeper bus, very practical
