Hong Kong or Singapore??? Please Help us:)

Me and my friends (all girls) are planning to travel for a vacation this November 2012. We're thinking if we will go to Hong Kong or Singapore. This is our first time going to the places but we cant decide which destination to choose. We need to consider the weather, the expenses, and everything. Please help us:)

Where are you coming from?

Kathie Jul 27th, 2012 07:02 AM

Both Singapore and Hong Kong are expensive cities. You might want another option if you are trying to keep expenses down. More reasonably priced major cities in Asia are Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, for instance.

Weather: www.weatherbase.com

What do you want to do/see/experience on this trip?

Wow, this is a tough question as Hong Kong and Singapore are really quite different so it depends on what you are looking for. Hong Kong is a really fun, busy and chaotic city. It is a riot of colour, sounds and smells (the city has a distinctive smell in parts, like dried scallops). Both cities have fun nightlife, great shopping and a little glamour but Singapore is much more organized, infinitely cleaner and maintains much more of its history (most of old Hong Kong has long since been turned down). Both Hong Kong and Singapore have beaches, as well: Repulse Bay on the south side of Hong Kong Island is a favourite of mine, and Singapore's Sentosa Island has some beaches as well (but I saw much less beach life...beaches were smaller). Great food in both cities, but Singapore (which is much more multicultural) has a great deal more variety, I would argue.

Dear all,

Where are you coming from and how long you're staying? Both HK and Singapore are tiny places - neither one is worth flying, say, 20+ hours to get to for a weekend. Most visitors spend a few days in either as part of longer trips to other countries. For example, China for HK; Malaysia and Indonesia for Singapore.

Hotels in HK and Singapore are expensive compared to Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. However food and transport aren't really more so. There's lots of affordable food everywhere.

The answer to your question depends on how many days you have, what you would like to do.

For both HK and SG you can combine with trips to other places as well. Both have great connections to lots of great destinations.

Hi every once. We're from PH and we planned to have a 3-4days vacation. As of now we want to go to HK. Not yet sure..but we're going to finalized it next week. Any one knows the rate of hotels in HK?

simpsonc510 Aug 5th, 2012 05:52 PM

Where is PH? Is it Philippines? I would select Singapore because the weather would no doubt be warmer. Hong Kong is probably my favorite of the two (but Singapore is a VERY close second).

Kathie Aug 5th, 2012 05:52 PM

Take a look at one of the booking sites like www.agoda.com Hotels in Hong Kong are quite expensive.

rkkwan Aug 5th, 2012 06:16 PM

But weather in Nov is the best of the year for Hong Kong. Usually cool and dry. Singapore is the same year round.

As mentioned, hotel rates are high in both. For HK, a decent 4* hotel will run you US$250 a night in November. A cheap guesthouse in a scary building may cost US$40 a night. What type of accommodation are you looking at?

Qdawn Aug 5th, 2012 06:22 PM

rkkwan-- of course we want a good and comfortable accomodation. What do you think is the price if we choose 3* hotel?

Qdawn Aug 5th, 2012 06:23 PM

and if you compare the hotels in SG to HK what can you say?

Cameron_Jones Aug 5th, 2012 07:59 PM

Having gone to both last year, for me the choice is very easy - HK. SO much more fun for me, more action, more beautiful scenery (go to Stanley Market and the surrounding beaches in the south of the island!). The food life in Singapore was fun but otherwise every bone in my body says HK.

rkkwan Aug 5th, 2012 09:45 PM

Expect to pay about US$150 a night for a 3*.

kdd Aug 6th, 2012 12:23 AM

HK without a doubt. Much more interesting and exciting.

StanKase Aug 6th, 2012 09:55 AM

I think HK would be best for 3 full days-4 nights. You can find rooms at the Royal Orchid , which is quitre nice but just a little bit of a walk but you are young, from one of the main streets for $225 with tax/service per night or under $1000 for 4 nights per persoh. It is a classy place that is not too big and not off the wall pricing.

StanKase Aug 6th, 2012 09:57 AM

I should add food costs can be $50-100/day based upon the level of dining you choose unless you want good street food,

Kathie Aug 6th, 2012 11:39 AM

Stan is in the wrong city - the Royal Orchid is in Bangkok.

Qdawn Aug 7th, 2012 07:58 PM

We are almost decided to choose HK because we want to visit the ocean park, disney land, victoria park. Now im searching for the price of hotels in HK and compare it in SG. Im searching in Agoda and booking.com

fayeTSL Aug 8th, 2012 11:04 AM

It really depends on what you want. Food wise they are quite similar. Price wise they are quite similar as well.

Hong Kong people are much more mandrain influenced but there is more diversity in singapore and hence more variety in the food. There are also a lot more attractions in Singapore and its more modern and tourist friendly.

The best thing about hong kong imo was the never ending cable car, they have one of the best in the world.

Qdawn Aug 12th, 2012 09:25 PM

Hmmmmm...

Guenmai Aug 13th, 2012 08:33 AM

Where is PH?

I have never been to Hong Kong, but have been to Singapore a lot and love the diversity there and the food is great. Happy Travels!
