Hong Kong on New Year's Eve

I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for what area to stay in in Hong Kong on Dec 31? I am not certain how HK does New Years, but I suspect there is a bit going on. I would like to be within walking distance of the hub of activity. Parties? Fireworks? Nightlife? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Tsim Sha Tsui should be good if you want to see some fireworks and have some nightlife.

That's the Kowloon side for you that are unfamiliar with HK

Thank you both for the reply.

Chinese do not celebrate western new year. Our new year starts in February.

Yes we HK folks do celebrate the regular New Year's Eve - I believe the previous poster was just talking about the situation in Mainland China.

There'll be countdowns in Times Square Causeway Bay and also in Lan Kwai Fong. Both places will be flooded with people. Buildings on both sides of the harbor will also be decorated with interesting lightings.

There won't be fireworks though. We only have fireworks during the Chinese New Year (somewhere in mid-February) and the 10/1 National Day.

Todd,

The party areas are on the two sides close to the harbor - that's Tsim Sha Tsui on Kowloon, and Central (Lan Kwai Fong), Wan Chai and Causeway Bay on the HK side. As long as you're in those areas you'll be surrounded by people looking for a good time.

As a HK native, I promise you that western new year and christmas are both very much celebrated in this vibrant city. In fact, Chinese new year, though most important to the native culture, is a more family-oriented event. The two major western holidays are times when people gather with friends and take the fun to the streets.

Just be sure youre ready for HUGE crowds. New Years in HKG is not for the faint of heart, or the claustrophobic!
