So I may stick with first two weeks in January then, maybe hit Taipei first, around 3rd Jan, do around 4 nights there, then hit HK for a week.

Thanks all, I think we're decided. Assuming we can find availability, once airmiles bookings open for january 2017, we'll use miles for a return flight London to HK and buy an add-on return to Taipei from there.

I'm now hoping to do 5 nights in Taipei, to allow for a one or two night trip out to Taroko.

We'll then head back to Hong Kong for 7 nights. I haven't decided for certain whether we'll do a night in Macau or just visit as a day trip - and it may also depend on the flights to Taipei, will check whether is best to book from HK or Macau airport...

Thanks again for all your input, I'll certainly come back for more help when I have flights and am nailing down itinerary, hotels etc.

Folks, just wanted to let you know I've now booked flights and have a firm number of nights in both KH and in Taiwan. As it's now much firmer, I've started one new thread for each location, so I can get more specific advice.

We have 8 nights in HK of which I may spend 1 in Macau (have revised downwards based on @Cicerone's and other posters' advice) or may just do Macau as a long day trip after all.

We have 5 nights in Taiwan, of which I've tentatively put aside 2 for a visit to Toroko Gorge (with cancellable booking held at Silks Palace for 2 nights) and the other 3 nights in Taipei. If there's not sufficient in Taipei for that duration, we can always consider another day trip.

Would be grateful for any further tips now my itinerary is more fixed - please just click on my user name to access the new threads.

Rkkwan would be super grateful for your suggested itineraries for Macau, both for a (long) daytrip and for a 1 night stay. On the new thread for HK would be better, if that's not too much trouble. THANK YOU AGAIN!
