Hong Kong Hotels--moderate
long waited return to HK after an absense of several years...
want a convenient hotel for restaurants and transportation, but not for sights, except the harbor... probably 3* hotel--step down from marriott/sheraton etc... $80-125 if possible, but can go higher...comfortable beds, elevator thanks |
Holiday Inn Express in Causeway Bay would be a solid choice. In the middle of Causeway Bay/Times Sq area, so shopping, restaurants, subway, and tram are at the doorstep. Rates are probably right around $110/nite

thanks don

I liked the Booth Lodge; it was convenient for getting around and comfortable. Of course, this has been a few years ago now, but the location remains the same. :)

Salisbury Y? We liked the location and the great views. Rooms were comfortable, though very plain.

We stayed last year at the Jen Hotel, staff are excellent, it was our second visit, it is a bit out of the way but we really like the area it has a very "local" flavour,we had a club room, Jen room including breakfast and drinks the rate was very good. Taxis are easy to get, local bus stops outside, and tram is just a short walk, they have a shuttle bus to the Star ferry at Central and to the Airport train so no problems getting around, easy taxi to central and the restaurant area. 711 type stores, cake shop (yummy) and even a Macdonalds next door if you really must!

and I forgot to say the bed (at the Jen Hotel)was excellent - not hard!! The Jen is a comfortable hotel probably similar to a Marriott Courtyard not 5 star. We have also stayed at the Island Pacific - similar area to the Jen Hotel but bed was very very hard. Also stayed at the Ramada (same area) definitely a no no, Langham Hotel at Kowloon was good big room but bed was very firm, but one of my favourite places is the Marco Polo Hotel Kowloon right next to Star Ferry, nice rooms and lovely comfy bed! But I really don't like the touts at the Kowloon Ferry Pier!! Hope this is of some help?

I stayed at the Excelsior in Causewaybay, and it was great.
I think it is the 4* little sister of the 5* Mandarin Orientals in HK (same company). Rates are about $150 I think. |
We also stayed at the Excelsior several years ago in a Club room, that was excellent, but the cost was higher than the Jen. The Excelsior was also in a good location, but it is a very busy popular hotel. We ate (twice) at the hotel restaurant - ToTT, food was also excellent and views were great! We much prefer staying on Hong Kong Island than Kowloon.

Friends of mine who lived in Hong Kong just recommended this hotel in Central to me.
If you book 21 days ahead, their rates are great--from $150US up on the dates I checked for myself. Reviews on TA are very good-excellent. http://www.lankwaifonghotel.com.hk/ |
I have not stayed in that hotel but lan wai fong is a great location, probably the best imo because nowhere is more central than that. If you are into clubbing, bar scene, talking to strangers, picking up people, you are in heaven. If you are not, go there for dinner and drinks anyway, there are enough restaurants to choose from; hangout a bit, bar hopping a little, it's great people watching really. LWF itself is unique, it's west meets east, a popular destination for some local (mostly non Chinese) and tourist esp in the evening. In the day time, you can take a walk on Hollywood road to Cat street, feel free to wonder off into small lanes; stick your nose into small local restaurants and try everything.

If you are into clubbing, bar scene, talking to strangers, picking up people, you are in heaven.
Sounds perfect for the OP. |
What dates?
|
november
|
Too early to determine which hotel. Wait until around August when hotels post their rates, and then see which is the best hotel you can get for your budget at that time.

rizzuto lol! To be fair, Bob is pretty good at talking to strangers.

Hi, I enjoy staying at Park Hotel, Tsim Sha Tsui,Kowloon. This has been recently refurbished and rooms are a good size, beds comfy. I think rates vary from NZ150-$200 per night which is about double in US dollars. Also in this area have stayed at Empire Kowloon in Kimberley Road - rooms are smaller but beds very comfy, also handy to some good restaurants - favourite of ours is Nomads in Kimberley Road, mongolian style where the food is very fresh, you choose your own and it is cooked in front of you. Also Knutsford Steps has a variety of european and international cuisine - lots to choose from. This area is very handy to good shopping and MTR train stations, also star ferry, harbour and a few minutes travelling by train to Central Station, Hong Kong Island.

cheapskate,lol Karen deserves better......
You can try the Sheraton on the good side of the harbor using 1000 points and getting 50% off rate currently at $220.00 US for random nites in Nov. As you get closer you can try for their points and cash deals if they offer them (usually open up around two months in advance). I like Don's HI Express reco as we like the Causeway Bay area but not as much as TST You should be up with us in Kyoto in November..... Aloha! |
should read "meet" up with us.....

The Salisbury Y admittedly has no charm but the view from the harbor view rooms really is spectacular and the location is very convenient for just about anything. If you need a bit of posh, you just go next door to the Peninsula or diagonally across the way to the Intercontinental for drinks or a meal or a stroll. Meanwhile, you are near all forms of transportation and your lodging costs are under control.
My husband needed a room for one night later this month and he was price-sensitive so I booked him into the Lan Kwai Fong in order to try something different. I see that ekscrunchy references it above. If you are considering it, we would be happy to report back to you in mid-late January after he stays there. If you have specific questions about the premises that you want him to investigate while on site, let me know sometime before MLK weekend. I actually stumbled on that hotel by accident. I went to look at the LFK hotel website because of Cicerone's recommendation. The LFK booking form kept seizing up and, after a thrashing around and minor Googling mishap, I jumped sites and wound up at the Hotel Lan Kwai Fong website, another award-winning boutique hotel with reasonable rates. I was about to switch back to the LFK when a little more research disclosed some favorable reviews (including by Pauline Frommer) and the Lan Kwai Fong was also a little less expensive than the LFK. If I understand correctly though, the Hotel Lan Kwai Fong is NOT in Lan Kwai Fong whereas the Hotel LFK (A Rhombus Group hotel) IS in Law Kwai Fong so heads up on that. (Mohan's comment above presumably refers to the neighborhood rather than any hotel.) |
