The Salisbury YMCA is a good choice - don't let the name fool you: it is not like your neighborhood Y's!

What's your budget?

Hi Walter - we have a budget of approx $150usd/night. is there a benifit to stay in hong kong or Kowloon?

Danak...tourists tend to stay in Kowloon but Hong Kong is good too. In any case you will be travelling backwards and forwards on the Star ferry.Hong Kong side is the main business side with tourist attractions as well . Kowloon tends to be more the views and shopping side.Where to stay? The Salisbury as previously mentioned gets excellent reviews especially the harbour view rooms. The moderately priced hotels where I have stayed and enjoyed include the Park and Mirimar (both on Kowloon)and of course there are more uparket places like the Peninsular and the Intercontinental.Good luck and enjoy my favourite city !

For $150 a night, you can get better hotels than the YMCA, Kowloon or the Miramar. On Kowloon side, that price can probably get you the Sheraton, Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel, or the Hyatt Regency (all older, established 4* hotels with excellent locations in Tsimshatsui; the first two with harbor views). Or you can try the brand new Langham Place, which is a 5* property in the crowded Mong Kok district.

On Hong Kong side, I suggest you stay in the Causeway Bay area, which has tonnes of shops and restaurants. [Central is quiet at night, and the better hotels there usually cost more.] Regal Hong Kong, Excelsior or the Park Lane are all in the heart of Causeway Bay.

how often does the Star Ferry run? Any suggestions as to things to see and do in Hong Kong?

Take the ferry once or twice for the views and fun but after that use the subway to get around quickly.

They basically run 6:30am to 11:30pm continuously.

would highly recommend staying in kowloon - the view of the hong kong skyline is just incredible...plus, there is excellent jade shopping and some excellent museums in kowloon as well.

If you can get the Marco Polo Hong Kong within your budget, I'd particularly recommend that hotel because it's closest to the Star Ferry. We usually stay in Kowloon and go over to HKI for the day - transportation, by ferry or taxi, is inexpensive, clean and readily available.
