Hong Kong/Hotels

I will be in Hong Kong at the end of March and am looking for a reasonable hotel, central to the city. It is more important that it be comfortable, to American standards, and under 100$ per night. Thanks in Advance

stacey-

Your best value would be the YMCA at Salisbury Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. It is right next door to the famous Peninsula Hotel.

The Salisbury YMCA is an Asian-style business hotel: clean, basic comfort and facilities, certainly far better than any/most YMCA. However, it might lack some of the features or amenities you want in an "American-style" hotel.

Somewhat more comfortable places to stay in the same area that you might find for under $100 would be the Holiday Inn Golden Mile, or the Renaissance New World.

I'd avoid using Priceline for Hong Kong because the zones are too big, and you might wind up in a hotel that's far from where you'd want to be. In the TST zoone, for example, you could end up in a great location (the Sheraton, for example), or you also could end up way up by the Jordan MTR station.

Hi

My wife and I stayed at Kowloon hotel right next to YMCA at Salisbury Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. We payed 85 US dollars a night. I have posted a review of the hotel together with a trip report and pictures on my personal homepage www.gardkarlsen.com :-D Maybe it can be of some use to you.

We just got back and stayed at the Salisbury YMCA. The room was plain but clean and fully equipped, and I, an American, didn't notice any standards that were failed. We stayed there using their weekly rate, which was about $82 US a day, for a partial harborview room (actually a pretty good view) and included one free breakfast a week, and a daily paper. You are also made a temporary member of the Y, which gives you a good discount at their better restaurant, where the buffet, with discount, was about $380 HK for two, with a surprisingly good choice of fairly well done foods.

The Kowloon Hotel, behind the Peninsula, was on my backup list. We stood by the lobby waiting for the Airport bus, and it looked nice, but we didn't get to see the rooms.

Kowloon Hotel is in very good position but the rooms are not only small they are miniscule! the Y in the same area gets very good reports . Also try the Mirimar and the Park. Good hotels, will meet your requirements..I've stayed at both and would do so again . Enjoy Hong kong ...my favourite city in the world!
