hong kong camera shop recommendation

we are going to HK again and have today decided that i would finally invest in a good slimline digital and retire my trusty slr....can any one recommend a reputable camera shop in HK?
we leave in 3 weeks so we might as well wait until we get there- have done our homework and decided on a camera that suits

If you're living in the US, definitely buy local. Cheaper prices and US warranty.

If you live somewhere else where prices are high and must buy there, I'd try the photographic equipment shops on Stanley Street in Central. They cater to real local photographers, and are honest merchants. I would not buy from stores in Tsimshatsui. Mongkok ones are generally okay, but they're often too crowded with pushy salespersons.

better to buy at home....just today i was told about a 10mega pix casio camera on sale currently at some of the big chain stores....sounds like a good buy....personally i have a sony and don't think, for the price, that you can beat it...

BTW, I checked Olympus' Hong Kong website. They don't sell the 725sw there, but the 720sw, same as N. America.

I can't find price reference of this model in Hong Kong, but here's why I think you'll be better off buying in the US if you live here.

Fortress, a large electronic store (reputable one) in Hong Kong, sells the Olympus FE-200 online for HK$2,480 (US$318). Here, you can buy one shipped and no tax for $155 from amazon.com. Yes, you may be able to bargain for a discount in Hong Kong, but I doubt you can get 50% off.

As mentioned, if you live in the US, you ca get it cheaper here. If you live in Europe, you may be able to get it cheaper in Hong Kong. HOWEVER, make sure you get an international warantee with it. Most cameras in Hong Kong are sold only with local warantees.

A local HK friend of mine bought a camera in Mongkok (not from a chain store). He thought he got a good deal until he discovered there were stuff missing from the box. Even locals can get ripped off. There are reliable shops out there but for tourists I would only suggest to buy from Fortress or Broadway. Tip: Typically the prices at chain stores are fixed but you can ask to see if they are willing to give you a free camera case or a better memory card.

Yup. There are several stores on Stanley Street - one block south of, or up the hill from, Queen's Road Central. Photo Scientic, Everbest, Kwong Tai and Chung Pui are the best known and reputable.

I've heard you can bargain with Fortress or Broadway, specifically the ones in Mongkok as they have to compete with all the other shops. Might be able to get 10% off the price.
