This question often is asked here and both sides have their supporters. I think most would suggest Kowloon and it is certainly my preference especially if you have not been before. Lots of shopping, markets, great views etc. Hong Kong side has its atractions too but to be honest, whichever side you decide on, you will be travelling across the harbour frequently on the Star ferry anyway.Have a great time!

I would consider everything together - price, quality of hotel, and location.

Unless you want one of the most incredible harborview of the world, then you may want to get the Peninsula or InterContinental on the Kowloon side.

I've just returned from HK and stayed in both but I preferred the HK side. It had a nicer atmosphere, the park, nightlife etc. We found that on Kowloon, Nathan Road area we got hassled more and it wasn't as picturesque. That said the view from Kowloon is amazing but you can always treat yourself to a meal in Felix at the Peninsula and watch the skyline from there. It is a fantastic restaurant.

Tsimshatsui and Central is just 2 MTR stops (~4 minutes) away; or a short Star Ferry ride.

MTR trains run until 1am, so unless you tend to stay up that late, it's not an issue crossing the harbor easily and cheaply. After that, then you'll need a taxi ride.
