DO NOT CANCEL! All is well now. The king has endorsed the coup, and Thaksin is staying in his apartment in London.

The following is a statement from a property manager who I rent condos from. He sent me this today:

Throughout ThaksinShinawatra’s five and a half years in power, he was exposed as a greedypolitician who has pursued self interest at the expenses of the public good, rampant corruption and abusive of power.

Ideally, the likes ofThaksin should be rejected at the ballot box or through public pressure in theform of peaceful protests. The problem is most people did not believeboth options available to them would succeed in removing from power. Tomany people the military coup against Thaksin may be a necessary evil.

The military coup tookplaced late last night in a very peaceful manner, totally bloodless andnon-violent.

Gen. PremTinnasulanonda, President of Privy Council, has an audience with HM The Kinglate last night as the coup was underway.

Although, the coupleaders declared today ‘a holiday for government, banks, stock exchangeand schools in order to quickly restore law and order, otherwise, all life isnormal, restaurants, shopping centers, cinema halls and other tourist spots areall open. There is almost no difference to life and movement along Sukhumvit Road(known as Manhattan, New York of Bangkok),except for fewer traffic on the roads. Life and movement is also normalalong Government House and Army Headquarter, except that we may see few tankson the road.

The coup makers areluckier than those before them in that much of society now believes they havedone the wrong thing for the right reason.

The coup will beexpected to promise to return sovereign power to the people, organize a freeand fair election and then ensure a smooth transfer of power to the nextdemocratically elected civilian government.

My husband spoke with a work colleague who has family in Thailand -- her sense was that things are peaceful -- I wouldn't cancel either. There were more small riots/protests etc that were disruptive before the PM was ousted. Seems he was the real problem.
