Great! It sounds like your trip is really coming together!
|
Finally! As I mentioned, I'm a big planner, so this last minute stuff has stressed me out! I think we were very conflicted about doing a mostly-resort itinerary, so spending significant time in Cambodia will give us more of the cultural experience we are looking for.
The lucky thing is, we have a cousin who will likely be marrying his Thai girlfriend in Thailand within a year or two; darn it, we'll just have to go back and see Northern Thailand then! Our new itinerary is as follows: 9/21 Arrive in Bangkok (stay 3 nights @ Oriental) 9/24: Bangkok -> Phnom Penh (arrive early morning, stay 1 night @ Raffles Phnom Penh) 9/26: Phnom Penh -> Siem Reap (arrive early morning, stay 4 nights @ ???) 9/30 Siem Reap -> Samui (stay 4 nights @ ??? maybe Sala Samui) 10/4 Samui -> Bangkok (stay 2 nights @ Sheraton) It's still one more hop than we'd like, but we really want to hit Phnom Penh, and this way, the only connecting flight we have in the whole shebang is Siem Reap to Samui through BKK. ALl the rest are short flights, and we'll have most of our day, as opposed to the other itinerary where every move entailed 2 flights. Whee!! Off to find a good hotel in Siem Reap... |
Lastly, what I like about this itinerary is we could have flexibility to move a day to/from SR, Samui, or Bangkok in those last three legs.

It looks good. You'll want to book the Bangkok Air Discovery pass, as they are the only airline that flies SR - BKK and between BKK and Koh Samui. You can fly Thai Air to PP.

Thanks. My husband pointed out that my dates were slightly off, but no matter. Same number of nights!
9/21: arrive BKK, stay 3 nights in BKK Oriental 9/24: BKK -> PP, stay 1 night in PP Raffles 9/25: PP ->SR, stay 4 nights in SR 9/29: SR -> KS, stay 4 (or 5) nights in KS 10/3 (or 10/4): KS-> BKK, stay 2 (or 1) nights in BKK Sheraton 10/5: depart BKK (late at night; technically, it's 10/6) Kathie, we talked to Bangkok Air this morning, and got some great times for these flights on the Discovery Pass. Thank you for your help -- I think we're pulling it all together! I can't wait for all the replies I'll have in the morning in my inbox -- I wrote to Ponheary, Sala Samui, Green Gecko, and a few other places today. We are so excited for this trip!! |
I would consider doing 2 nights in PP since it's a 5 hour bus ride there, but up to you. If you're flying back from PP, then at least it's just one way, so not that big of a deal.
|
Thanks cookie. We're flying the whole time b/c I have a herniated disc -- the less time on buses, the better!
We're considering doing two nights in PP and three in SR now... I'll keep you posted via trip report! |
I am a huge fan of the Oriental and I urge you to stay there at the end of your trip as well. First, the better they know you the more extras you get and, most important, they will let you check out very late if you ask and tell them you are on your honeymoon (you'll also get upgraded). When I took the 1AM flight I didn't check out of my room until 10PM and they didn't charge me a penny. I know of no other hotel that does that and I have heard NUMEROUS reports of it happening at the Oriental -- especially when it isn't peak season. The Sheraton will either make you pay for the extra time or will make you check out by noon. BIG difference!
|
I would do 2/3 night split as you're considering as well.
Be aware that Siem Reap-Samui flight is not available via Discovery Pass, unless you pay for 2 legs flying through Bangkok. There is another discussion on this on the forum right now. You can also just buy that leg on their website if you already have 3 legs with the pass without it. |
Gloria, thanks for the heads up -- we'll consider that!
