Honeymoon Feb 2017 - Hong Kong and ?

Hello all,

I have been given the task of planning the honeymoon for my fiancee and I who are getting married in Feb 2017. We've narrowed it down to two options, and I'd really appreciate some advice and guidance on our choices:

We want to do a twin centre honeymoon, starting with a luxury hotel in Hong Kong (for 3 nights) and flying from here to a more relaxing 10 night stay. Our choice is currently between Bali (Ubud & then onwards to Lombok / islands) OR Philippines (we haven't done much research on this!)

#What we want?

-Secluded feel, but within reach of local towns/villages

-Culture & things to see & do - diving / temples / nature (we like a good beach but it isn't all about that!)

-Good food (we would like to be able to eat & drink in local recommended places)

-Mix of environment ie. the lush parts of Ubud, combined with the beaches is a real plus

-Not a resort - we're a bit concerned about how commercial Bali might be

#Things to consider-

-We are in our late 20s

-We've been to most of SE Asia and loved it (particularly Koh Tao in Thailand, and Hoi An in Vietnam)

-Our budget is c. £4-5k inclusive, including flights and the Hong Kong part

-We are travelling in February 2017

Thank you in advance for your help - ANY SUGGESTIONS VERY WELCOME!

My experience in the Philippines is limited so I can't make a comparison; but I would say that Bali fulfills more of the nature+culture items on your wish list and is more accessible. Because of weather in February, however, I would suggest that you also look at the west coast of Thailand.

It's hard to define "secluded" vs "commercial" in Bali. The entire island is low rise and aside from the congestion around Kuta beach and Ubud central, offers a lot of serene and beautiful spots, even in the popular beach areas. The resorts themselves, if you choose carefully, are part of the experience. Temples, ceremonies, processions are everywhere. You can't escape Balinese culture, even when it's overlaid with tourism.

You will get rain in February, sometimes quite intense storms. This won't slow you too much in Ubud, but it's not the best time for the beach. The ferry crossing to Lombok can also be rough at this time. I'm not sure about diving during the rainy season either. The upside is that rates will be low in February and you will be able to upgrade to a more secluded resort or even a private villa.

I think the combination of the Ubud area and a beach location is good. Lombok has some wonderful beaches and resorts, but not much else. You might enjoy a couple of nights in the Petitenget/Seminyak area as well for the restaurants, shopping and laid-back surf culture (though you're likely to get some stormy weather in February).
