Hoi An & recent typhoons/storms
 

We are scheduled to go to Hoi An in 2 weeks for a few days during our trip to southeast asia. I have been seeing all of the reports of the recents storms and the current storm/typhoon Peipah that is supposed to make landfall this weekend.

We can easily re-work our trip to exclude Hoi An if necessary, but would need to do so early next week.

Questions for the experts are:
1) If there is flooding, how quickly do the waters retreat & does the town get "cleaned up"?
2) What would you do if in my shoes? I want honest opinions.

This is our first trip to the region but most likely will not be our last.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

I thought this was an old post, then suddenly realised we are taking 8 Nov 2007.

This may not be the time or the place but, jeez, that American date format is one you should get rid of.

Why can't you join the rest of the world and use the far more logical ddmmyy format?

Anyway lorib1, now that I've had my rant, I thank you for posting, cos I may be there at around the same time.

I won't need to decide when or whether to visit Hoi An until I get to HCMC, but still, I'll keep an eye on replies.

chimani, the date is set by the website, not the person posting. So you were correct that this wasn't the time/place to complain about this.

To answer the questions, Peipah is now only a tropical depression. It will make landfall on 11/10/2007 near Nha Trang. Hoi An shouldn't get affected much.

Flood waters receed pretty quickly there once the rains stop. The town gets cleaned up pretty fast. This is the rainy season, so you can expect rain. I wouldn't change my trip.

Can we have a vote on the date format?

Moderators, are you listening? As this is an American site ("the home of democracy") I assume you will take heed.

Posters, what do you think?

I vote for the Bhuddist calendar with the Chinese date format, i.e. today is 2550/11/09.

Or.... we can use the star trek format and today is stardate "-315142.67265981744"

Forget the date question... I'm scheduled to arrive in Hoi An on December 2nd (or 2 December if you prefer), should I be rethinking this stop on my Vietnam trip?

(And thank you to everyone else who has posted on Vietnam and Thailand, the posts have been invaluable in my trip planning)

We are scheduled to arrive on Nov 24 - and are deciding whether or not to change our plans as I've indicated in the initial post. I haven't been able to find any info online about Peipah (which was supposed to make landfall on Nov. 10).

The photos I've seen online of Hoi An from the prior storms/flooding the 1st week of November look pretty bad.

Can anyone provide any websites to look for up-to-date info or is anyone over there now?

NYCvoyager - take a look at the Hoi An message board on tripadvisor.com -- there is a person posting on there who is in Hoi An today with the flooding. Seems to be pretty bad.

Guess the question is how quickly they can clean up and the waters recede.

Peipah dissapted out over the South China Sea before it hit the coast. It was supposed to come in south of Nha Trang.

Got a call from my brother-in-law last night that said his house was flooded. He's about 30 miles SW of Hoi An.
